This Month @ The Library
February 2023
Message from the Director
Joseph M. Booth and Associates (JMBA), the architects for the Library’s renovation, have created documents and drawings for the work. These have been presented to a cost estimating firm to determine a price for the work. It’s our hope to have working drawings for the project in April and for construction to begin in July.

I will keep you posted as the project develops.
Young Adult & Children's Programs
February in the Children's Room is all about love: the love of football, fun programs, STEAM activities, and Axel the puppy. We will kick off the month with a display celebrating the Super Bowl. Find a book about your favorite team, do some coloring pages, or vote for who will win the Super Bowl and favorite game time food! The display and activities end February 11.

Children ages 9 and up can register to paint a Valentine's puzzle on Saturday, February 11, at 1 pm. We will also have drop-in Valentine's crafts for all ages that day from 10 am to 4 pm.

We have several activities planned for February vacation! Drop into the meeting room anytime between 11 am and 2 pm on Tuesday, February 21, for our first ever STEAM-A-THON. Children will get to try several of our amazing STEAM cart activities, like Marble Run, KEVA planks, Snap Circuits, and much more. Suggested age of 4 and up, but all children are welcome.

We offer two programs on Wednesday, February 22. Make and Take Legos for children ages 5 and up runs from 10:30 am to 1:30 pm in the meeting room. Drop by during that time to build a cool creation. Bring a Lego base plate or box to carry your creation home. Coding Robot Obstacle Course Competition for children ages 8-12 will run from 2:30 pm to 4 pm in the same room. Children will work as a group to create an obstacle course and then break into teams to code our Dash and Dot robots in a race through the course!

Everyone loves Axel, the town's famous puppy and honorary mascot! Children ages 7-10 will combine their love for reading and puppies with our Read to Axel program Thursday, February 23, at 11 am. Children will take turns reading for a short duration in a judgment-free environment. Registration required.

Children ages 2 and up will love the Play-doh Dig and Seashell Imprints STEAM activity Friday, February 24. Drop by the children's room between 10 am and 3 pm for this sensory and discovery program.

Hear stories, sing songs, and get up and move with our story times on Mondays and Thursdays at 10 am. Story time is geared towards children ages 1-5 and their caregiver but is open to all who are interested. We end each program with a craft. We will not have story time on February 20 and February 23.

Chess Club returns February 2 and February 16 at 6 pm. Chess Club meets bi-monthly on Thursdays and is open to kids ages 8 and up, teens, and families! All experience levels are welcome, but please note that there is no instructor.

The STEAM cart will come out each Tuesday from 11 am to 6 pm and Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm with a different activity. Some of our activities include Snap Circuits, KEVA Planks, crafts, Marble Run, robots, and Play-doh. Check our website for each day's planned activity. *The STEAM cart will be replaced with the STEAM-A-THON on Tuesday, February 24.

The Library has purchased a subscription to Ancestry Library Edition, the world's most popular consumer online genealogy resource. With your RML library card, you have access to  billions of  historical documents, millions of historical photos, plus local narratives, oral histories, indexes and other resources in over 30,000 databases that span from the 1500s to the 2000s. Ancestry Library Edition includes the digitized images of the U.S. Federal Census from 1790 forward, the American Genealogical Biographical Index, Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, court and military records, slave narratives, reference sources and more. Join the crafting group on Wednesday, February 8 at 1:30 to create a country style door hanging. You will embroider and embellish a felt mitten, then fill it with greens and berries. Or add your own hearts or shamrocks to make it a Valentine's Day or St. Patrick's Day decoration. The class is limited to 10 adults ages 18+. Please register at the Reference Desk or call 508-699-0122.

The next book discussion will be held on the second Tuesday, February 14 at 1:30. We will be discussing Guncle by Steven Rowley. Patrick has always loved his niece and nephew. That is, he loves spending time with them when they come out to Palm Springs to visit, or when he heads home to Connecticut for the holidays. But in terms of care taking and relating to two children Patrick is honestly a bit out of his league.

So when tragedy strikes Patrick finds himself taking on the role of primary guardian. Despite having a set of “Guncle Rules”, Patrick has no idea what to expect. Quickly realizing that parenting isn’t solved with treats and jokes, Patrick’s eyes are opened to a new sense of responsibility, and the realization that, sometimes, even being larger than life means you’re unfailingly human.

Our book displays this month are Happily Ever After (or Not) and Black History Month.
