COVID is, regrettably, something that we will have to learn to live with for the forseeable future. Just like influenza and the common cold, it is here to stay, likely forever. At the Library, things are returning to normality more and more. Over the course of April, the plexiglass barriers came down at the Circulation desk, in the Children's Room, and now, finally, at the Reference desk. We will keep the barriers - just in case. Masking is encouraged, but not mandated. Welcome to the new reality.

Spring has sprung in the children's department...and so have our activities and events! In April, 155 patrons took part in the library's Look Around Boston scavenger hunt! We kick off May with a Royal Storytime and Party on Saturday, May 7, at 11 am. Children of all ages will hear stories and make crafts with our princesses. Children are welcome to come as princesses, princes, and superheroes! Thank you to the North Attleboro High School, the school theater students, and teacher Jillian Gabriel for volunteering their time for this special event. We will have yummy treats generously donated by the Whisk and Paddle Bakery in North Attleboro and the Friends of the Richards Memorial Library. Storytimes continue every Monday and Thursday at 10 am in the month of May with the exception of Memorial Day. Join us for stories, songs, dancing, and a craft. Masks remain required on everyone over the age of 5 at storytime. Tweens and Teens can design and make vinyl stickers using the library's new Cricut Explore 3 on Wednesday, May 11, from 6 pm to 8 pm. The stickers will be great to add to a favorite water bottle, phone case, notebook, and more! There are eight spots available, two every half hour. Call the Children's Department at 508-699-0122 to reserve your spot! Ages 10+. STEAM Saturdays will be on May 14 (make a marble run) and May 21 (Magna-tiles). Visit the children's room anytime between 10 am and 3 pm on these days to enjoy these activities that incorporate engineering and physics! Children ages 6+ can enjoy designing and making their own buttons using our button maker on May 25 from 5 pm to 7 pm. This program will take place in the children's room and does not require registration. Luisa Earle, also known as Silhouette Cosplay, will teach teens about the world of cosplay, answer questions, and show off some of her amazing handmade creations May 28 at 2 pm. Luisa's performance as Loki earned her Best in Show at the Boston Fan Expo in 2018, and an appearance in one of our circulating books, A Guide To Film and TV: COSPLAY. This is a drop-in event for teens ages 12+ and adults in the downstairs meeting room with no registration..

The Library is holding a contest for local artists. We are looking for original paintings that will be used to decorate the two book storage containers in front of the Library (similar to the utility boxes around town). For more details, go to the RMLonline.org website. Speaking of artists, two of our creative staff members are exhibiting their watercolors in our Downstairs Gallery. Cathy Firicano's abstract landscapes and Janet Jordan's animal portraits are brightening the hallway. Please take time to look them over. This month's craft project is a butterfly and initial bookmark. Lori Yarworth will teach you the elements of cross-stitch. No previous experience is required, We will meet on Wednesday, May 18, from 1:30 to 3:00. The class is limited to 10 adults. Please register by calling 508-699-0122.
