Ennanga (Chamber)
This album by harpist Ashley Jackson takes its title from a harp played by the Ganda or Baganda people of Uganda, coming to Jackson via a work for harp, string quintet, and piano by William Grant Still. This work qualifies as neglected, having been recorded just twice since its composition in 1956, and it forms the centerpiece of Jackson's program. It is quite an impressive piece, in three movements, written in Still's usual neo-Romantic style but carrying subtle overtones of the Ugandan instrument. It is an intriguing fusion, and Still reports that a Ugandan in attendance at an early performance told him that it reminded him of home. Still's piece is flanked by works arranged for the harp, two from the jazz realm by Alice Coltrane (a harpist herself) and Brandee Younger, and two from piano works by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. The latter, perhaps, are less idiomatic to the harp, not quite transcending the pianistic quality of the music, but these outer works have an attractive consistency of mood, broken definitively by the Still work. Jackson's playing is beautiful, and the album is absorbing in the way that it captures different strands in harp music. The pieces were recorded in three different venues, not always with ideal results. ~ James Manheim

City Of Gold (Folk)
City of Gold follows Tuttle's acclaimed 2022 record, Crooked Tree, which won Best Bluegrass Album at the 65th Annual GRAMMY Awards and led NPR Music to call her, "a female flat picker extraordinaire with agility, speed and elegance who distinctively brings American roots music into the spotlight," adding that the album "marries the improvisatory solos of traditional bluegrass with singer-songwriter sophistication. "Produced by Tuttle and Jerry Douglas and recorded at Nashville's Sound Emporium Studios, City of Gold was inspired by Tuttle's constant touring with Golden Highway these past few years, during which they have grown together as musicians and performers, cohering as a band. These 13 tracks-mostly written by Tuttle and Ketch Secor (Old Crow Medicine Show)-capture the electric energy of band's live shows by highlighting each members' musical strengths. In addition to Tuttle and Secor, Mason Via also co-wrote "Down Home Dispensary," while Melody Walker and Shelby Means co-wrote "Next Rodeo."

Symphonic Celebration (Soundtrack)
A Symphonic Celebration - Music From The Studio Ghibli Films Of Hayao - Hitchock and Herrmann, Spielberg and Williams, Zemeckis and Silvestri, Burton and Elfman, Fellini and Rota. There's a certain kind of magic that happens when a director and composer work together for an extended period; their imaginations are fueled by an artistic sensibility which becomes, inevitably, entwined. Such deep understanding between two artists has proffered memorable, even legendary, cinemusical experiences. But there's another of these partnerships we must honor and mention in the same breath, that of director Hayao Miyazaki and composer Joe Hisaishi.

Temptation (World)
Some of the most unique Italian jungle exotica mambo music you'll hear! You won't usually find those words together but because this record, released in the late 50s only on reel to reel tape, was twice produced layering cultural madness! This gem was originally designed to be a Francis Bay album of Italian music and Cuban Mambo, until the masters were sold to producer Kirby Allen who with the help of faux African tribesman, Chaino, added African style percussion and animal sounds up the wazoo! If the much-bandied-about word exotica stands for anything, it stands for disparate cultures playing well together with others, and Temptation: The Exotic Sounds of Chaino is a case study in international relations that could serve as a teacher's guide in how to set up a Model UN. If there's a more quintessential example of the African-Cuban-Italian-Spanish-Polynesian-American Songbook as recorded by a Belgian combo, this author is unaware of such an artifact. - Gaylord Fields (WFMU)
