19th Amendment

The 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was passed by Congress on June 4, 1919.  The amendment granted women the right to vote.  American women first collectively organized for suffrage in 1848 at the First Women's Rights Convention in Seneca Falls, New York.  Check-out the National Park Service's subject guide HERE! The NPS has worked hard to compile a lot of information and resources for those interested in the history of women's suffrage--from historic pictures and documents to podcasts, timelines, storymaps, and even lesson plans.

Women's Suffrage
The women's suffrage movement
by Sally Roesch Wagner

"Comprised of historical texts spanning two centuries with commentary on each period by the editor, this book covers the major issues and figures involved in the women's suffrage movement with a special focus on diversity, incorporating race, class, and gender. The writings of such figures as Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony are featured alongside accounts of Native American women and African American suffragists such as Sarah Mapps Douglas and Harriet Purvis"
The women's march : a novel of the 1913 Woman Suffrage Procession
by Jennifer Chiaverini

Inspired by actual events, this novel offers a fascinating account of a crucial but little-remembered moment in American history that follows three courageous women who bravely risked their lives and liberty in the fight to win the vote
Something worth doing : a novel of an early suffragist
by Jane Kirkpatrick

"Based on a true story, pioneer Abigail Scott denies herself the joys of a simpler life to achieve her dream of securing rights for women. But running a controversial newspaper and leading suffrage efforts in the Northwest carry a great personal cost. A tender, powerful story of a woman's conflicts--with society and herself."
