Highways On Jun 29th, 1956 the Federal Aid Highway Act was signed into law. The new bill authorized the construction of 41,000 miles of highway and was the largest public works project in American history (at that time). Lesser known fact: the bill's actual title is "National Interstate and Defense Highways Act." So, why defense? One of the original purposes of building the highways was to provide direct links between all major US Air Force bases in order to create well-maintained supply lines and better defend the US during times of war (this was the 50s and the Cold War was a thing...).

International Selkirk Loop The International Selkirk Loop is one of only 32 designated All-American Road National Scenic Byways in the U.S. It is 280 miles taking you through the Selkirk mountains, into Canada (and back home), and includes the longest free ferry ride in the continent (!) across Kootenay Lake. (And if you choose to do it, don't forget to stop at the libraries at Priest River, Newport, and Metaline Falls--your library card works at these locations in case you need to refill your stack of books for the road.)
