November 2024
From The Director's Desk
“Fear not November’s challenge bold. We’ve books and friends, and hearths that never can grow cold. These make amends.” Alexander L. Fraser
________________________
November is a time of transition. For many, the colors of autumn rival those of spring and comfort the unease of moving from fall to winter.  Here at the Community Library Network, we have also been undergoing a transition. Following our long and unexpected closures of the libraries in Athol and Post Falls, we have finally begun our return home. The reopening of Athol is planned for November and Post Falls will follow shortly after in early December. Patrons can look forward to new flooring, revitalized spaces, improved layout, and stronger collections. November is a month for thanksgiving, and, on behalf of all the CLN team, I extend my sincerest gratitude to all our patrons for their support of the Community Library Network.

Information Literacy
Information literacy is like having a superpower to effectively evaluate and utilize information found in books, the internet, and other information sources. Exercising your problem solving and critical thinking skills develops your information literacy. You can then access reliable sources, spot fake news, and make informed decisions in your personal, professional, and academic life.

Staff is Reading...
The Birchbark House
by Louise Erdrich

"She was named Omakakiins, or Little Frog, because her first step was a hop. Omakakiins and her family live on an island in Lake Superior. Though there are growing numbers of white people encroaching on their land, life continues much as it always has. But the satisfying rhythms of their life are shattered when a visitor comes to their lodge one winter night, bringing with him an invisible enemy that will change things forever--but that will eventually lead Omakakiins to discover her calling"
Dumb luck and the kindness of strangers
by John Gierach

"In Dumb Luck and the Kindness of Strangers, Gierach looks back to the long-ago day when he bought his first resident fishing license in Colorado, where the fishing season never ends, and just knew he was in the right place. And he succinctly sums up part of the appeal of his sport when he writes that it is 'an acquired taste that reintroduces the chaos of uncertainty back into our well-regulated lives'"
We Fought for Freedom : The Story of Our American Revolution
by Tara Ross

"We Fought for Freedom" tackles the challenge of teaching young children about America's fight for independence by dividing the Revolutionary War into 16 topics, each presented in chronological order and each as its own double-page spread. Presenting the Revolution in bite-size portions will help children remember the general Revolutionary War timeline and what its highlights were--and they can do it without memorizing a list of names and dates. "We Fought for Freedom" is beautifully illustrated by Kate E. Sands, and it provides an easy, fun way for children to learn about our rich American heritage.
