North Idaho Summers & Adventure

Northern Idaho is built for adventure.  Arriving on my first day as Director of Community Library Network, I was greeted by an outstandingly beautiful summer day and fun, friendly, and smart staff.

With over three decades of experience in public libraries, I can assure you that the summer season in library-land is busy!  The hustle and bustle of summer reading programs and activities for children, teens and adults keep readers of all ages engaged.

Nothing says summer freedom more than the smell of sunscreen and the feel of warmed pages of a paperback book read by a lake. Last year, Community Library Network’s libraries welcomed almost 400,000 visits.

So, grab a book and go or come for a program and discover books to take to camp.  I encourage everyone, stop by a public library this summer – your adventure awaits!

Floriography : an illustrated guide to the Victorian language of flowers
by Jessica Roux

Floriography is a full-color guide to the historical uses and secret meanings behind an impressive array of flowers and herbs. The book explores the coded significances associated with various blooms, from flowers for a lover to flowers for an enemy. The language of flowers was historically used as a means of secret communication. It soared in popularity during the 19th century, especially in Victorian England and the U.S., when proper etiquette discouraged open displays of emotion. Mysterious and playful, the language of flowers has roots in everything from the characteristics of the plant to its presence in folklore and history. Researched and illustrated by popular artist Jessica Roux, this book makes a stunning display piece, conversation-starter, or thoughtful gift.
