Summer Reading Continues... We've all heard the terms "summer reading loss" or "summer slide," but what does that actually mean? Study after study shows that students lose reading skills over summer break; this recent 2020 study showed a 20% reading loss in 3rd and 5th graders over summer! How can you help prevent this skill loss? Participate in our Summer Reading program! The Community Library Network's summer reading programs are crafted to help our community battle this "summer slide" phenomenon. How can we all help each other? Consider the following: 1) Any reading is good reading! For our youth reading challenge it doesn't matter what you read, just that you do it at least 15 days a month. Establishing the habit (and connecting that habit to joy!) is more important than reading something "hard enough." 2) Participate in events at the library. Although they may seem like just fun & games we've done the background work in figuring out exactly how to build different skills and literacies while still having fun. 2) Model the behaviors you want to see. Participate in adult summer reading and let kids see you enjoying reading, learning, and participating in your community.
