Commemorative Library Mugs
|
|
We have had a lot of fun celebrating our 50th anniversary this year, and even though 2021 is beginning to wind down, we aren't done yet! These custom-order Of Cabbages & Kings mugs were made to help us commemorate our 50th year in a lasting way, one that allows you to bring a small piece of the Library home with you. We think they're the perfect companion for your favorite hot drink when you're curling up with a great book! Each one of these gorgeous mugs are handcrafted, and no two are exactly alike. They are limited edition, and we have a very limited supply. We have a feeling that these are going to sell out fast so we wanted to let you, our newsletter subscribers, know about them first. Mugs cost $30 each, cash or cheque only, and can be purchased at the Canmore Public Library starting today, November 1st. Be sure to get yours before they're gone!

Just a friendly reminder that the Canmore Public Library will be closed on Thursday, November 11th in honor of Remembrance Day. We would like to take this time to express our gratitude to all the men and women who have served, and continue to serve, Canada in times of war and peace. We honor those who have fallen in service of our country. Lest we forget.

Board Member Name: Willy Fung How long have you been a board member? Coming up to the end of 3 years. What is your position on the Board of Directors? Usually sitting down but I am not on the executive, just a Director. What made you decide to join the Board? My wife said I should, so I did. Why are libraries important to you? Libraries were a great part of my learning resource when I first came to Canada in 1973. Long before the internet, Google and Wikipedia, books and magazines were readily available for a poor student at no cost and libraries became a tremendous support system. I had an English teacher who encouraged reading (even comics) and we had to list 10 words weekly and find their meaning in a dictionary. I learned a lot of new words this way. If you could have any superpower, what would it be? Eradicate illiteracy and ensure available financial support for families with children with learning disabilities. Willy's Board Pick Anything by Sue Grafton and John Sandford. Willy's current read by Aaron James has a NSFW title that we couldn't publish, but you can place a hold on it here. Willy says it's "Fascinating!!".

Did you know that there are over 100 authors who call Canmore their home? We are so excited to shine the spotlight on local authors for our newsletter subscribers! We are so excited to welcome our own Fortune Whelan as our Local Author Spotlight this month. Fortune was born and raised in Calgary but moved to Canmore a few years ago and quickly fell in love with mountain life. When she's not busy writing, she spends some time behind the counter at the Canmore Public Library! Read our interview with Fortune below. What advice would you give to any committed writer? First, write. There are no shortcuts to publishing, whether traditional, or indie, the only way to finish anything is to start writing. The only way to continue to improve your craft, to polish your voice, to finish your manuscript, is to write. Now, how you do that is up to you. Some writers will tell you to write every day, others will tell you to write when inspiration strikes. However, you do it, make sure it makes sense to you. Honor your own process, but don’t give the process too much power. Writing always comes down to putting words on a page. I know how this sounds, but writers know! What is the best investment you ever made in your writing? I’ll always pay money for anything that saves me time. I can always make more money, but I can’t make more time. In terms of tools, invest in a good keyboard (mechanical or ergonomic, it will make a difference in your longevity), a good chair, an editing program (there are many), and access to books (library card, KU, your local indie bookstore). By far, the best investment I ever made in my writing was finding a writing community filled with my people. I put this down in investment because access sometimes costs money or membership fees, but what you gain in networking, opportunities, friendships, critique partners, beta readers and information you otherwise would haven’t gotten except through your own trial and error is absolutely invaluable. I’m a member of the Toronto Romance Writers, the Inclusive Romance Project, The Inclusive Authors of Romance Association, and Wordmakers. Does writing energize or exhaust you? Both. Always both. Writing is invigorating, creative and wonderful when there’s momentum. But exhausting on directionless days, on deadline days, on days when I’m playing catch-up. Writing is rarely good or bad for me, it just is an intricate part of who I am. All I know is that not writing is not an option for me, I’d lose myself. How did publishing your first book change your process of writing? It’s made me a better writer. To write outside of my comfort zone, and to write with the reader in mind, which ironically is much harder than you think. The more books I turn in, the more I realize that the path to every book is different. The only thing that’s the same is just to sit and write. What is your favorite genre to read, and why? I read everything. I’m a voracious reader. I love craft books because writers are always willing to share what worked and didn’t work for them. Craft books are like cheat codes. I also love celebrity memoirs because truth is stranger than fiction. As for fiction, the more bonkers the story, the better. As long as there’s a happy ending. Fortune's debut novel, Stuck with You, releases April 5, 2022 from Tule Publishing. Pre-order yours today!

Help up preserve our past, present and future by adding to our Community Time Capsule, to be opened in 50 years when the Canmore Public Library turns 100! In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Canmore Public Library, we are creating a community time capsule to be opened on our 100th anniversary in 2071 - and we need your help! Do you have a small token or item that represents life and the library today (or over the past 50 years), that you want to share with the library community of 2071? Create or find something that you think encapsulates life as we know it, and bring it to the library to be put in the time capsule. Be sure to include your name, age and a brief description of your contribution and its significance. A few suggestions to get you started: - A letter to someone in the future.
- A prediction about what life in 2071 will look like.
- A book review about your favourite book right now.
- A small, meaningful token or trinket with an explanation of what this means to you.
- Hot topics or trends of the last 50 years, and your opinion of them!
- A birthday card for the Library's 100th anniversary.
- Share a photo of a library program or activity you participated in, or write a sealed letter about what the library means to you.
- Did you celebrate a birthday, graduation or other milestone during COVID? What did that look like? Share a photo or write a story about your experiences.
- Did the library help you during the pandemic? Tell us how!
