Constance Baker Motley
|
Please Meet: Constance Baker Motley A Woman of Many "Firsts" Constance Baker Motley was born September 14, 1921 in New Haven, CT. She would go on to be the first Black woman to graduate from Columbia University School of Law in 1946. Shortly after, she joined the staff of the NAACP, where she would play a pivotal role in the fight for civil rights. While with the NAACP, Motley led the fight to integrate the Universities of Alabama, Mississippi, and Georgia. She wrote the original complaint opening the case of Brown v. Board of Education in 1954. She was the first Black woman to argue a case before the Supreme Court and would go on to win 9 out of 10 total cases she argued. She was the first Black woman to be elected and serve as New York State Senator. She was the first Black woman to be elected Borough President of Manhattan. Finally, she was the first Black woman to be appointed as a federal judge, by President Johnson in 1966. She died in 2005 and was posthumously awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 2006.
