2024 Summer Learning Program
June 1 to August 15
 
It's time for Simpson Library's 2024 Summer Learning Program, Adventure Begins at Your Library!
All ages are invited to join us for the annual Summer Learning Program from June 1 to August 15! Register online and then track your reading and activities online with Beanstack to keep learning and earning prizes. You can also download and use the Beanstack Tracker mobile app to log your reading and activities. Beanstack has some helpful videos available for learning how to use the app.

Everyone can earn prizes for reading this summer! 
Children will track reading and do activities to earn many fun prizes. You won't want to miss the special performances every week and unique programs like Adventure Club and Storybook STEAM.
Teens will track reading and do activities to earn raffle tickets for a chance to win one of eighteen fabulous prizes.
Adults are challenged to log each book they read through August 15. Each book read and logged is an entry into a weekly prize drawing and an entry into the grand prize drawing. Go a little further and complete the Reader's Dozen Challenge to earn a special prize. 
 
Back this year: GO Cumberland!
The GO Cumberland! program encourages us to Get Outdoors and Choose an Adventure! Search for fifteen wooden marker posts or "Portals" with a unique etching attached that are hidden in fifteen local and state parks in Cumberland County. Pick up an Itinerary guidebook or find the hikes on the Go Cumberland! website. When you find the marker posts, you will see the unique etching, along with a 4-digit code. Make sure you remember this code (take a picture, write it down, etc.) and do not forget to enter it into the Beanstack app to earn credit for your hike and be eligible to win prizes from WellSpan Health.

Simpson Library Capital Campaign

Imagine more library program and meeting space and a permanent home for the Friends of the Library Book Sales! That's what is planned for the new Learning and Book Sale Center at 45 West Allen Street! It is located just a few blocks from the existing library. The building you know and love on North Walnut Street will remain the hub of our library services. We need your help to meet our $2,000,000 campaign goal to renovate the space into a flexible, modern space. Welcome to the Apple Users Group for Seniors! Every month tech expert Barry Gordon comes prepared to share new features and tips. There is also time to get your questions answered.
Barry Gordon is a retired business owner from Harrisburg. However, in 2018 he had a vision for a new business venture. He began Senior Tech Tutor LLC specifically to help people who are struggling with their electronic devices. Being a senior himself, Barry brings the patience and understanding necessary to teach you to use your iPhone or iPad with confidence.

Paragons of People's Music:
Kris Kristofferson
Wednesday, June 12, 7:00 to 8:30 pm
 
Doug Morris is back by popular request! This summer, he will help us celebrate a number of monumental songwriters and singers of "people's music" who have made vital contributions to U.S. culture. On June 12 you'll learn all about Kris Kristofferson and his music in this interactive presentation.
Each 90 minute performance will focus on the songs/music of a particular artist and include commentary, discussion, projected lyrics, and some visual revelations. There will be opportunities in each case for some singing along and possibilities for exploring various percussion instruments. All are welcome.  Creating and sharing some collective joy will be one of the hoped for outcomes for each "Paragons of People's Music" program.   
Doug Morris (Ph.D., Penn State) teaches in the world of critical pedagogy at West Chester University and is a former jazz guitarist, singer, composer, and performer of "people's songs," and has written about Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Bruce Springsteen, and others in the tradition of "people's music."

The next American Red Cross Blood Drive at Simpson Library is on Friday, June 14 from 12:15 to 4:45 pm.

Mushrooms, the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
Wednesday, June 26, 7:00 to 8:30 pm
 
Learn about mushrooms with Peter Tocco on June 26! Peter will use colorful slides and illustrations to explain the evolution of fungi and how they’ve played a critical role in both the atmosphere and soil. Plus, he'll go over the major types of mushrooms that can be found in our area.

Peter is a nature enthusiast who lives in the Michaux Forest where he's been growing and foraging mushrooms for five years. He is retired from his career and can happily spend his time on his appreciation for mushrooms.

Beautify the Barriers

Be sure to check out the new artwork on the barriers at the far end of our parking lot. Twelve local artists or artist groups have painted murals on the line of concrete jersey barriers transforming them into fabulous works of art! The paintings all reflect the 2024 Summer Learning Program theme "Adventure Begins at your Library."

Plant Workshop

It doesn’t matter whether you have a green thumb or not when you are in the hands of Plantscapes by Design! Mother-daughter duo Jamie and Jessi will guide us through the steps of transforming a planter and a few succulent plants into an adorable, easy care, living arrangement! Join us for this hands-on workshop.
Plantscapes by Design will provide all the materials we will need, including plastic gloves. Register early for this session as we can only accommodate 20 people.

Located at 120 East Allen Street, Snapper's will donate a percentage of the cost of your meal to the Friends of the Simpson Public Library! Congratulations are in order for Dawna Trump, Simpson Library's Development Coordinator, who was named the May Employee of the Month by the Cumberland County Library System Foundation. Employee of the Month nominations celebrate outstanding customer service and are nominated by their peers and coworkers. "Whether Dawna is working the auction, program sponsorships, the annual appeal, or any of Simpson's other special events, she always has things under control and makes her job look easy. She is a great ambassador for Simpson throughout the community!" Dawna has worked at Simpson since 2017.

Library Visit
Friends of Kline Library Visit Simpson
 
On May 21, the Friends of Kline Library in Harrisburg visited Simpson Library and toured the library and our Book Sale Center. The Friends of Kline Library regularly visit other libraries in a spirit of collaboration and in an effort to learn from other libraries. They spoke to the President of our Friends Board and other members of the Simpson Friends and got a "behind-the-scenes" tour of the Book Sale Center. We were thrilled to have them visit our library!

Puzzle Party

Craft-a-Palooza

Does your child love making crafts? Then definitely make time for Craft-A-Palooza on the third Saturday of the month! Drop in any time from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm. Each child can make two crafts. One craft will follow simple instructions or an example. The second craft, our “craft challenge,” is based on a monthly theme and will allow your child to express their creativity and individuality.

100 Books Before Graduation
Teens, we have a program just for you! Students in grades 6 to12 are able to sign up for our 100 Books Before Graduation program. Your goal is to read 100 books before your high school graduation. You can register for this program on Beanstack or by visiting the circulation desk on the upper level of the library. You can track your reading on your Beanstack account or by using the Beanstack Tracker app. You will receive a prize after every 25 books and a grand prize after finishing the program! Tea and Stitches 
Join us in Simpson's lower level meeting room for a cup of tea as you work on your stitching project every Tuesday morning from 10:00 am to noon. Mah Jongg
Come play Mah Jongg at the library every Thursday from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. Mah Jongg is a rummy-like game you play with tiles rather than cards. We meet in the lower level meeting room. Registration is not required!

English Conversation Club
If English is not your first language and you would like to practice, come to the library's English Conversation Club on June 10 and June 24 from 6:30 to 7:30 pm. The program is free, and no registration is required. You must already speak English to attend.

Adults are invited to join us on the fourth Tuesday of every month at 6:00 pm to play your favorite board games and meet other board game enthusiasts in the community!  This month it will be held on June 25. The library will provide board games and snacks, but you are encouraged to bring your favorite games to play if you want. Bring a friend or two along as well! This program is for ages 18 and older. No registration is required.

What's on Display

Display Case
 
Our lobby display this month features the lovely oil paintings of Mechanicsburg resident, Richard Neff. Richard has been a painter for over 50 years and he has honed his talent beautifully. He was recognized as the Artist of the Year at the Vienna Arts Society in 2018. He is a member of the Mechanicsburg Art Association, the Art Association of Harrisburg, and the Seven Lively Artists of Harrisburg. He enjoys painting en plein air (painting on site outside) and his subjects reflect that. Richard's paintings will be on display until the end of June.

Community Aid donates $0.06 to the library for every pound of clothing and shoes donated.
