Libraries across the nation have taken Mexico’s children’s day and turned it into a mixed event (Día del Libro) celebrating children and literature with the purpose to encourage literacy through diverse books and languages. CAN YOU RHYME?
The ability to hear rhyming sounds is an important language skill that lays the foundation for learning to read. Use the five early literacy practices of talking, singing, reading, writing and playing to help your child develop this skill. The library has a large selection of rhyming books in the children's picture books and nonfiction poetry books sections.

Talk:
  • Point out rhyming words when you are reading.
  • Point out things around you that have rhyming sounds, such as socks and clocks. Explain how they have similar ending sounds and that's what makes them rhyming words.
  • Come up with rhyming sounds or words, even if you or your child make up nonsensical words that aren't real words, just like in Dr. Seuss books!

Singing:

Alternate Version of Hickory Dickory Dock
Hickory, dickory dock.                                        (rock body side to side)
The mouse ran up the clock.                               (run fingers up one arm)
the clock struck one,                                          (hold up 1 finger)
The mouse had fun,                                            (smile)
Hickory dickory dock.                                          (rock body side to side)
Repeat rhyme with:
Two, the mouse said, "Boo!"           (hold up 2 fingers and say "boo")
Three, the mouse said, "Weee!"     (hold up 3 fingers, raise both hands up and say "weee")
Four, the mouse said, "No More!"    (hold up 4 fingers, shake head side to side)

NOTE: explain that the word "dock" has a similar ending sound as "clock", and so they rhyme. The same with "two" and "boo", "three" and  "weee", "four" and "more". Singing this rhyme over and over again will help kids hear the sounds.

Five Little Flowers (tune: “Itsy-Bitsy Spider)
Five little flowers standing in the sun,                      (hold up 5 fingers)
See their heads nodding, bowing one by one,            (fold fingers down 1 at a time)
Down, down, down, came the gentle rain,                (flutter fingers down like rain)
And the five little flowers lift up their heads again,   (hold up 5 fingers again)
1,2,3,4,5.                                                                 (point and count together)

Read:
  • Read rhyming picture books, Mother Goose rhymes and simple children's poetry books. Make a game of finding all the rhyming words in the story.

  • Write out words with similar endings on paper or cards, show your child how they have repeating letters such as "at" at the end - mat, cat, sat, rat, bat. If your child is beginning to form letters, have them practice writing those words with crayons, chubby markers, fingers in sand.
Play:
  • Play "I Spy" with an emphasis on things that rhyme. For example, you can say, " I spy with my little eye an animal with 4 legs that rhymes with log. What is it?" "A dog!"
  • Draw or cut out illustrations of objects that rhyme on index cards, and ask your child to match up the pairs that rhyme - clock with sock. head with bed, chair with bear, etc.
  • Sing a familiar song and leave out the words that rhyme so that your child has to complete the song with the rhyming word. For example. sing "twinkle twinkle little star, how I wonder what you ____", pause and let your child fill in the word. "Up above the world so high, like a diamond in the ____", pause and let your child say the word. Say and stress the rhyming words slowly.
