Day / Book Day) is a day created by librarians and educators as a celebration of childhood and bilingual literacy. It emphasizes the importance of advocating literacy for every child regardless of linguistic and cultural background. The celebration is cross-cultural and intergenerational. In the words of one of the founders of this annual event, author Pat Mora: “April 30th has become a day for remembering the power of words and books in the lives of our young people and for honoring all the languages spoken in the homes of this country. One in five of our school children comes from a home in which a language other than English is spoken. By honoring these languages, we celebrate our linguistic and cultural wealth.”

Celebrate Mother's Day!
Activities:
  1. Make a Mother’s Day card.

  2. Make a painted rock photo holder.

  3. Provide a special treat such as a massage for mom, help with a chore, or make mom a breakfast in bed.
What young children learn through these activities:
  • Letter recognition – when they see, hear and write the letters that spell “MOM”, they learn to identify and name those alphabets. They can learn this through the words you help them write on the card, as well as when they “sign” their own names.
  • Fine motor coordination - While cutting, gluing, painting, coloring, stringing and folding, kids practice using the little muscles in their hands that are needed to learn to write.
  • Narrating skills – When a child tells you what they enjoy doing most with their mother, or when they describe what they would like to say in their Mothers Day card, they learn to put thoughts into words.
  • Social emotional skills - Doing something kind for others help children take the perspective of others (what would mom like help with?) and understand how it feels to do something kind. If a child is working with a sibling or another family member on Mother’s Day activities, they learn to cooperate and perhaps learn new skills.
  • Creativity and Imagination – Creating art and stories give children the opportunity to use their imagination and to have an appropriate outlet for their thoughts and feelings.
