Explore Outside: Learn While You Play
As you explore outdoors this summer, whether you are taking a walk around the park, visiting a farmer’s market, going to the beach, or just hanging out in your yard, practice these five early literacy skills with your child to help their brain develop the foundation for learning to read later on - Talk, Sing, Read, Write, Play.

Talk:
Describe What You See while on a walk or ask your child to describe something they noticed. Expand their language skills by including different words for colors, shapes, texture, sizes, smell, habitat, actions, weather, measurement, etc. Or you can discuss what you see in a book that you have just read together. Compare and contrast what they see in the book and what they see in their surroundings.

Read:
Check out some books about exploring outside from your library. You can start with the following booklist. You can also hunt for alphabets as you explore. Help your child look for alphabets such as the letter “S” in a stop sign, the “P” in a park sign, the “R” in a restroom or rest area sign, or the letter “B” in a beach sign.

Sing:
Listen and sing together:
  • “Nature Walk” song by Cocomelon: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=suQ69K5CdFo
  • “The Green Grass Grows All Around” sung by Buffalo and Brandy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnVq2YRpbQc
Write:
Encourage children to practice using their hand-eye coordination and the muscles in their hands to create.

Shower curtain painting:
Hang a plain or clear shower curtain liner along a fence, secure the bottom so that it doesn’t flap in the wind. Then have children use water-based paints and big brushes to paint on the shower curtain. When they are done, they can hose it off, or use a big sponge and soapy water to clean off the curtain. Fun with painting or fun with water? Either way, it’s just fun!

Nature collage:
Collect some found objects from nature during a nature walk to create beautiful collages using contact paper. Here is a project that you can try, or you can make up your own ideas:
https://handsonaswegrow.com/craft-for-toddlers-nature-collage-suncatcher/

Play:
Nature Scavenger Hunt: Draw some animals and other naturally found objects on a paper or little booklet. Either while you are on a drive, or a hike, or just a regular day out, see if children can find those things on their paper. If they find more than one of each object, show them how to make hash marks and have them tally them up at the end of the day to see how many they found.
You can also try printing out some free scavenger hunt cards found on websites such as this one:
