Although the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed all enslaved people in the U.S., was passed on January 1st 1863, the last region that actually implemented the Proclamation did so on June 19th,1865. June 19th became a day of celebration for the end of slavery in America. People gather to eat great food, hold family reunions, dance or recite the Emancipation Proclamation among other celebratory activities. 2021 is the first year that NYS is celebrating Juneteenth as an official holiday.
