Remembering All U.S. Military Veterans – Past and Present
In honor of Veterans Day, we are sharing the story of a patriotic day in Mishawaka's history when WWI recruits were given a heroic send-off before heading off to war.
The photo above captures a glimpse of that day, May 10, 1917, as the recruits gathered on the front steps of the U.S. Post Office.
The building is now the Heritage Room at the downtown Mishawaka Library, where the photo is on display.
Mishawaka's Historian Laureate, Peter De Kever, said," We have Veterans Day coming up. This photograph is an excellent way to remember the many Mishawaka men and women who have served our country in the armed forces. That picture, indeed, is worth far more than a thousand words. It's one of the ways that we can make history more personal and real is by encountering that photograph."
