Fall is here and it's the perfect time to cozy up with a good book! We are launching a new morning book club with a focus on historical fiction and a spooky book choice for October. We also have two Maine authors visiting us for evening events, an all-ages conservation presentation by Marine Mammals of Maine, and the last chance to catch our current museum exhibit!

Author Visits: Tom Verde & Amy Safford |

We are fortunate to have two authors visiting Dyer Library in the month of October!
Join us on Tuesday, October 1st for a presentation by Tom Verde, author of In a Class All Their Own: Unique and Historic Boats of New England.
This engaging multimedia presentation will discuss several boats featured in the book, including their classes and designers, as well as their relationships to the waters in which they sailed, raced, and cruised.
This event will take place in the Deering Room from 6:00-8:00 PM. | |

On Thursday, October 17th we will be joined by Maine author Amy Safford, who will be discussing her debut novel Goode Vibrations of the Wresting Place.
This contemporary adult novel follows the transformation of Penelope Goode after a near-death experience. When she and her uncle survey a graveyard, she senses her first vibrations—spirits of the Malaga Island settlement reinterred on these very grounds after a forced exile over a century ago. Through a slow unearthing, Pennie uncovers the past and recognizes the power of her dreams.

Last Chance for Current Exhibit |

If you haven't yet visited our currrent exhibit The Fabrics of Their Lives: Textiles in the Lower Saco Valley, now if your last chance to catch it! This fascinating exhibition follows the story of textiles in the Saco River Valley beginning with home production in colonial New England, through the rise of industrial production in the 19th century that culminated in a massive mill complex in Saco and Biddeford, ending in the early 21st century when the last of the mills closed and production was sent overseas. Filled with artifacts, photographs, and hands-on displays, it's not to be missed!

We are excited to debut a new book club with a focus on historical fiction that will meet in the morning! Meetings will be held roughly the third Wednesday of each month at 10:00 AM in the Board Room. The first meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 23rd and the book we will be discussing is The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield. For a copy of this book, please visit the Circulation Desk. Recycling Challenge Update

| Our Trex Challenge effort is going strong! Our Challenge to the community was to collect 1,000 pounds in 365 days. The Sells family, along with many, many other community members, patrons, and friends of friends have helped us collect over half our goal in just 58 days. The overwhelming response is awesome. We’re at 509 pounds as of September 27th!
To participate, start collecting plastic right now and store it at home. Once you have collected a few trash bags-worth, drop them off at the Library or Museum during regular business hours. Together we can do it! |

Watercolor Class Reception |

On Tues Oct 15th local artist Judith Kinsman will be hosting a reception featuring the work of students in her Watercolor Class. This reception is open to the public and will be held in the Deering Room from 5:00-7:00 PM. Light refreshments will be provided as well as entertainment by the Ocean Park Ukesters ukulele group.
Paintings from watercolor class students will be on display in the Dyer Library corridor gallery through the month of October. |
