Programming To Infinity and Beyond Ever find yourself in need of a ready-made programming solution? Maybe you're planning an event series that would be enhanced by a coordinated theme? Or, perhaps you have a new staff member who would benefit from a treasure trove of ideas and a bank of planning guides? Or possibly... you just need additional inspiration? Whatever the case, remember that through your affiliation with 2the Library of Virginia—a Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) member library—you can use the CSLP program manuals beyond summer.
In fact, CSLP encourages libraries to retain materials for future use. This includes incorporating past programming materials into winter reading programs, everyday story times, and library events. For more information, visit the Rules of Use page on the CSLP website.
To access program manuals from past years, visit the CSLP program manual archive and enter this year’s manual download code.

Take Your Child to the Library Day
The 13th Annual Take Your Child to the Library Day is Saturday, February 3, 2024 - though you can also celebrate on any other date in February that your library chooses. Visit www.ctlibrarians.org/page/take for graphics, planning resources, and activity ideas. Participation is completely customizable – it can be as simple as handing out bookmarks, or as elaborate as a full-day extravaganza. Registration is simple and free through this form. When libraries register, they’ll be placed on the national TYCLD map for their community to find.
TYCLD is an international celebration that encourages families everywhere to take their children to their local library. Launched in 2011 in Connecticut by librarians Nadine Lipman (Waterford Public Library, retired) and Caitlin Augusta (Stratford Library) with artist Nancy Elizabeth Wallace, TYCLD raises community awareness about the importance of the library in the life of a child, and promotes library services and programs for children and families.
Since 2011, more than 1,735 libraries have participated, serving 56.54 million people and drawing attention to the importance of the library in the lives of children.
Last year, the TYCLD team launched a new public-facing website: takeyourchildtothelibrary.org. The site features information about Take Your Child to the Library Day and the benefits of libraries for children, including an interactive map for families to find a participating library near them. Coming soon is a librarian resource page with information and tools to make participating even easier.
Libraries can get further information and inspiration from these videos:
Take Your Child to the Library Day is coordinated by the Connecticut Library Consortium and co-founder Caitlin Augusta. |

It’s Children’s Book Week November 6-12 Children’s Book Week is the annual celebration of books for young people and the joy of reading. Established in 1919, Children’s Book Week is the longest-running national literacy initiative in the country. Every year, young people across the country participate by attending events at schools, libraries, bookstores, celebrating at home, and engaging with book creators both online and in person.
Hundreds of schools, libraries, and bookstores will be holding special reading hours, and there are cool free bookmarks available to download, a very useful Educator’s Kit with lots of ideas for events, and more.

Halifax Public Library
Halifax Public Library's Summer Reading Program, Sing a Story, was a success with lots of local talent for special events that drew incredible attendance! Sue Brooks, Early Literacy Specialist, drew on the talents of her son to create the logo and print t-shirts and a friend with a print shop to create reading logs. This summer was been an inspiration for the creation of new programs for both children and their adults! |
Your library program can be featured here! Please submit a photo and description of your favorite program! |
