ONE BOOK ONE COMMUNITY UPDATE
Arshay Cooper visits Alliance

Arshay Cooper, author of  "A Most Beautiful Thing," the 2022 One Book One Community selection, visited Alliance on March 31, speaking at the Union Avenue United Methodist Church.

The book was a memoir about Cooper's life growing up on the West Side of Chicago and becoming part of the first ever all-Black high school rowing team while attending Manley High.

"I can’t do the work of eight. We need eight people to do the work, and we’ll get there much faster," said Cooper on several occasions during his talk, once noting that it was the first lesson that he learned from rowing.

He had much more to say during his inspiring and entertaining talk.

A PEEK AT THE PAST
Three boys look at the display case that stood in front of the Carnegie Free Library from 1926 to 1954 in this photo taken sometime during the 1930s that is among many found on alliancememory.com, one of several local history resources found at rodmanlibrary.com. Those interested in local history are encouraged to check out the genealogy and local history section of the website, especially alliancememory.org, which was launched with the help of the Alliance Historical Society, another source for local information about the Carnation City’s past.
