Robb Hyde to Give Lessons on Schoolhouses, Education in 19th Century
Robb Hyde, president of the Alliance Area Preservation Society, will talk about education in the Alliance area in the late 1800s. "Local Schoolhouses and the Three R’s in 19th Century Alliance," will take a look at the dozens of school houses that dotted the landscape across the Alliance area during the 1800s and the local efforts to establish a broad-based, and well supported education system in our community The program, a One Book One Community event, will be given at both 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Monday, March 6. It will feature photos of many of the old buildings, and trace the lives of some of the buildings that remain standing to this day.

Meteorologist to Talk Weather Prediction Eric Wilhelm, the self-proclaimed “Weather Geek” of the Mahoning Valley, is the chief meteorologist for WFMJ (Channel 21) in Youngstown and can be seen on weeknight newscasts at 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. On Saturday, March 11 at 2 p.m., Wilhelm will appear at Rodman Public Library to present “The Children’s Blizzard and Modern Weather Prediction.” Wilhelm will discuss the evolution of weather prediction since the freak January 12, 1888 storm that is the backdrop of The Children’s Blizzard by Melanie Benjamin, the One Book One Community selection.

Melanie Benjamin Visits March 23 Melanie Benjamin is looking forward to meeting readers in Alliance. “That’s the best part of my job,” said Benjamin, the author of The Children’s Blizzard, the 2023 One Book One Community selection. Benjamin will appear at Union Avenue United Methodist Church (1843 S. Union Ave.) on Thursday, March 23 at 7 p.m. She anticipates a stimulating discussion about The Children’s Blizzard and her work.

Movie Night is March 7 Rodman Public Library’s Movie Night is one that will be fun for the entire family when it screens Puss in Boots: The Last Wish on Tuesday, March 7. In the 2022 animated Dreamworks production, Puss in Boots discovers that his passion for adventure has taken its toll and he has used up eight of his nine lives and embarks on an epic quest to restore them by finding the mythical Last Wish. The film, which runs 1 hour and 42 minutes and is rated PG, will start at 5:30 p.m. No registration is required to attend the free movie, which is open to patrons of all ages. Children under the age of 13 must be accompanied by an adult. Freshly popped popcorn will be provided thanks to the Friends of Rodman Public Library. Seed Library Open March 1 Rodman Library is again partnering with StarkFresh to bring a “Seed Library” to Alliance. Beginning on Wednesday, March 1, vegetable and flower seeds will be displayed in the Library’s wooden card catalog located in the Library’s front lobby. Patrons may browse through the catalog and take the free seed packets of items they are interested in growing. The free seeds, donated by Marc’s grocery stores and Canton City Public Health, will be available through May 31 while supplies last.

RPL is VITA Drop-Off Site Rodman Public Library will serve as a drop-off location for the United Way of Greater Stark County’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program. Trained VITA volunteers help qualifying individuals file returns for free, looking for all possible deductions and credits. VITA is now taking appointments to check for eligibility and to schedule drop-offs for February through April for the 2022 tax return season. An appointment is needed for all drop-offs.

Books and Coffee The Books and Coffee Book Club usually meets every second Monday of the month at the Rodman Branch Library. Led by Charlene Duro, the next book club meeting will be on Monday, March 13 when the selected title will be The Midnight Library by Matt Haig. True Crime Junkies The True Crime Junkies, a book discussion group led by reference librarian Ashley Mock, meets at 6:30 p.m. every third Tuesday of the month at the Main Library. Alliance Vinyl Club Alliance Vinyl Club will meet at Rodman Public Library at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 1. Although it is called a club, there is no formal membership and no registration is required to attend the program, which is open to all music lovers. Those attending are encouraged to bring in some of their favorite records to play for others. The monthly program, which is held on the first Wednesday of every month and is supported by Friends of Rodman Public Library, is led by Byrun Reed and provides the opportunity to listen to music, hang out, and make new friends. Maker Monday crafters will decorate wooden Easter eggs and basket when they meet Monday, March 20 at 7 p.m. in Rodman Public Library’s Main Auditorium. Led by Nicole Brown, Maker Monday is an in-person craft program for adults that is held monthly on select Mondays. All materials are provided free of charge, thanks to Friends of Rodman Library, but space is limited and registration is required for each session.
