"A Personal Journey" with Susan McConnell Susan McConnell will present “A Personal Journey,” at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 12, detailing how an illness that caused her son to lose his sense of hearing at an early age put her on a path to learn sign language and eventually teach ASL college courses at the University of Mount Union A wife and mother of three children, she will share stories of raising her family, which has some similarities to the family in Song for a Whale. She will also share her experience as a grandmother as one of her seven grandchildren is also deaf.

Explore Eclipses with Jodi McCullough Jodi McCullough is no stranger to solar eclipses. A professor of astronomy at Mount Union, McCullough and her husband have attended five solar eclipses – one annular and several partial eclipses. And they have the photos to prove it. Ahead of the April 8 eclipse in which Alliance is close to the area of totality, the couple will share their photographs with library patrons on Saturday, March 23 at 1 p.m. McCullough will also discuss the causes of eclipses and their rarity as well as detail the path of the 2024 event. She will include information on how to safely view it and how to take photographs using cell phones or cameras with solar glasses and filters. She will also share a free app to capture the eclipse with a cell phone and a free program to process photos. Registration is required.

Preservation Architect to Speak to AAPS The Alliance Area Preservation Society will host renowned preservation architect Elizabeth Corbin Murphy, FAIA, during its annual meeting inside Rodman Auditorium on Tuesday, March 26 at 6:30 p.m. Murphy will present “Debunking Historic Preservation Myths: Beyond Little Old Gray-Haired Ladies in Sneakers” in which she will explore and honor the true essence of historic preservation, past and present. A graduate of the University of Notre Dame, Murphy has been a trailblazer for architects and preservationists in Ohio for more than three decades. With a rich portfolio of preservation projects and accolades from national and state preservation and architecture agencies, she is a cornerstone of the modern preservation movement, setting standards of practice. Friends to Hold Meeting, Sale The Friends of Rodman Public Library will hold a meeting as well as a mini book sale on Saturday, March 23. The combined annual membership and board meeting will be held 10 a.m. inside the Rodman Auditorium. Immediately following the meeting, a mini book sale and bake sale will be held in the children’s program room. During the book sale, the following categories of books will be available: children, hardback fiction, biographies, gardening, large print, and hardback non-fiction. Puzzles, games and sheet music will also be available. All items will be sold by donation.

I Read YA Book Discussion Forming I Read YA Book Discussion, a new group for adults who like to read young adult literature, will hold its first meeting on Monday, April 1 at 6:30 p.m. at the Main Library with plans to meet each Monday of the month. Registration will be required to attend meetings. Copies of the books will be available at the Reference Desk, or can be found electronically.

RPL is VITA Drop-Off Spot Rodman Public Library will serve as a drop-off location for the United Way of Greater Stark County’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program. Trained VITA volunteers help qualifying individuals file returns for free, looking for all possible deductions and credits. The free tax preparation service is available to households that earn less than $60,000 per year. VITA is now taking appointments to check for eligibility and to schedule drop-offs for February through April for the 2023 tax return season. An appointment is needed for all drop-offs. True Crime Junkies The True Crime Junkies, a book discussion group, meets at 6:30 p.m. every third Tuesday of the month at the Main Library. Alliance Vinyl Club Open to all music lovers, Alliance Vinyl Club will undergo a schedule change in 2024, meeting every other month. The group will meet at 6:30 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each even-numbered month — February, April, June, August, October, and December — inside the Main Library auditorium. The next meeting will be on Wednesday, April 3 at 6:30 p.m. Supported by Friends of Rodman Public Library, AVC provides the opportunity to listen to music, hang out, and make new friends. Those attending are encouraged to bring some of their favorite records to share a selection or two with others.
