Hello to our Library community. I hope you are enjoying your summer and taking advantage of our Oceans of Possibilities Summer Reading Program. Be sure to come out for our end-of-summer reading concert featuring High & Lonesome on Saturday, August 6th. I have seen them a few times and they are a lot of fun. This month I will briefly talk about the elephant in the room, which was the visit by the "first amendment auditor" on July 18th. These auditors visit public facilities, such as village halls, public libraries, police stations, and post offices, while live streaming video to the internet. They try to test policies and provoke a reaction. In this case, they were saying our policy of limiting adult access to the Teen space was unenforceable. Which is true, to a point. But most people respect that we want to give the Teens in our community a safe space to hang out and be themselves. And hopefully if Teens feel comfortable being in the library, they will continue to come to the library well into their adulthood and beyond. While this visit was somewhat disruptive, it was not, in and of itself, that big of a deal.
|
Unfortunately, because this gentleman was live streaming the event and also posting it to his YouTube channel, the viewers who follow these types of channels proceeded to start calling the library and leaving numerous voicemails, ranging from the merely misinformed ("Filming at the library isn't against the law!!" but we never asked him to stop filming) to the profane, bigoted, and threatening. These same people have also been commenting on our Facebook page and posting the link to the video of the "audit," as well as leaving 1-star reviews of the Library on both Facebook and Google. I apologize that this disruption resulted in us having to close to the public for a day and a half while we assessed the risk to the staff and to our patrons. I was especially dismayed that we were not able to serve our Youth summer lunch on Wednesday, July 20th. I just wanted you to know that the safety of our staff and of our patrons (including our Teen and Youth patrons) is of the utmost importance to all of us. And I wanted to personally thank you all for the community support during this incident. -Leighton Shell
