This May:- Continue to prepare the garden for planting, adding compost and mulch where needed.
- In early May, direct-sow seeds for peas, carrots, parsnips, scallions, beets, and greens, as well as the flowers calendula and alyssum.
- Plant seed potatoes.
- Continue to harden-off and transplant hardy seedlings like onions, broccoli, cabbage, and greens and the flowers pansies, snapdragons, calendula and alyssum.
- At the end of the month, when frost is less likely, direct-sow seeds for beans, squash, cucumber, corn, okra, gourds and melons. Also plant zinnias, cosmos, tithonia, and marigold seeds.
- Plant sweet potato slips when the weather and soil have thoroughly warmed.
