August Genealogy Newsletter
LTPL is a Family Search Affiliate Library!

For this month's Genealogy Newsletter, the topic is "Family Search Affiliate Libraries".

The good news for LTPL and our patrons is that we were chosen to become a Family Search Affiliate Library over 10 years ago!

Here is what that actually means for you:

As a Family History Affiliate, LTPL patrons have the ability to view records that are not available from home on FamilySearch.org. This means researchers are able to view more records on FamilySearch.org at LTPL than at home.

Here is an example of the different symbols you will see and what they mean:

Here is what I see from home when I search the film #1339589. This film contains records from Sicily.

When I click on the lock and key – this is what I get:

When you come into our library, this is what you will see:

I also have had an experience with some German records, when I searched the film number at our affiliate it still would not open here. SO, this means I need to take a trip to the Howell Family History Center which is a full-fledged Family History Library.

Virtual Beginning Genealogy - Following the Paper Trail

Tuesday, August 16, 6:30pm

You need to follow the paper trail that your ancestors have left behind. The papers you find will help you fill in the gaps of information that you are looking for and probably give you clues as to where to look for more information.

Cathy Cottone will show you the different papers you can look for and where to look for them.

Cathy Cottone has worked on her own family history since 1991 after she inherited her family bible. That took her to England where the family was from.

Once she walked the streets of her ancestors she was hooked. She needed to find out more about them.

Cathy since has found a job that involves her hobby of searching for family history. Cathy has worked at the Lyon Township Public Library as their genealogist since 2001 helping others find their roots.

Cathy's August Research Tip
Keep searching; you never know what you'll find!

No matter what website you use, take a few minutes and explore. Look for search tips. If you don’t get the results you were expecting, try doing the search in another way. Don’t assume that if you searched once and didn’t find your ancestor that he or she isn’t there.
