Get the whole family signed up for Library cards!
September is National Library Card Sign-up Month!

Libraries, while known for books, have so much more to offer to the public, such as printing and copying services, free access to digital streaming platforms, audiobooks, and media, programs for people of all ages, and more! We invite members of the community who don’t have library cards yet to come sign-up themselves and/or your families! You can choose to come in person, or you can fill out the online form from our website.

The first 50 people to sign-up for a library card will receive a LTPL swag bag! If the whole family is signed-up at once there will be a limit of 2 swag bags per family.

New Library Updates
New Library Plan Town Hall Recording

Members of the community joined us on August 23 as we discussed the design for the new library building. Quinn Evans Architects presented preliminary interior and exterior designs, and asked for public feedback.

If you were unable to attend the meeting you can watch the recording of the meeting from our YouTube channel by clicking here.

We invite members of the community to provide input for the design of the new library building by completing a short survey which solicits community feedback on the options that were presented by Quinn Evans Architects.

You can complete this survey here to help determine the best design options for the new library. We appreciate your feedback!

Visit the Reimagine Your Library page on our website to stay up to date with the latest information as planning progresses.

13th Annual Community Reads Selection
We are happy to present "Mika in Real Life" by Emiko Jean as the Neighborhood Library Associations 2023 Community Reads Selection

Synopsis:
Mika Suzuki’s life is a mess. Fired from a dead-end job, she shares a home with her best friend, who just might be a hoarder if all the unopened deliveries are a sign. Her last relationship ended in flames. And she’s a perpetual disappointment to her traditional Japanese parents, especially to her mother.
Then she receives the surprise of her life—a phone call from Penny, the baby she placed for adoption sixteen years ago. Now a headstrong teenager, Penny is eager to learn all about Mika, who she is and what her dreams are. The harder-won heart belongs to Thomas Calvin, Penny’s adoptive widower father. What starts as a rocky relationship with him slowly blossoms into friendship and, just maybe, something more.
Faced with her own insecurities, Mika at first embellishes the facts about her life. But Penny’s love revives so many of the dreams she once had, especially those about being an artist and making a difference in the world… ultimately forcing her to answer the question, just who is Mika in real life?

U.S. Service Academy Information Session
On Monday, September 11 Rep. Slotkin will host a U.S. Service Army Information session over Zoom for high school students interested in pursuing a nomination to attend one of the nation’s military service academies: the United States Military Academy at West Point, the United States Naval Academy, the United States Air Force Academy, the United States Coast Guard Academy, and the United States Merchant Marines Academy. This session is geared towards students who are considering applying in 2024, 2025, or 2026, but would also be useful for school staff and community members who wish to better understand the application and nomination process.

The session will feature remarks from the Congresswoman as well as informative briefings from representatives of the service academies. The discussion will cover requirements necessary to attend an academy as well as the Congressional nomination application process. It will conclude with academy representatives being available in break-out rooms for a virtual question-and-answer session for students and parents/guardians interested in a specific academy.

The link to attend will provided for registered participants. Register here: https://shorturl.at/myHM9

Tri-County Broadband Survey

Lyon Township is one of the communities that has been identified as a lower broadband access area. The Merit Network is asking residents to complete this 5-minute survey to help to improve access to high speed internet in our community.

Why High-Speed Internet Matters:
Now, more than ever, high-speed Internet is an essential and crucial service to those who live, learn and work in Macomb, Oakland and Wayne Counties. Unfortunately, reliable high-speed Internet access is unavailable county-wide. Accurate information about connectivity is needed to help bring high-speed Internet access to everyone in the Tri-County area.

If you don’t have internet service, you can still take this survey on a cellular web browser or text @moon to 1-855-613-1746. To request a paper survey, please contact 313-625-0029.

Books to Read During Hispanic Heritage Month
A long petal of the sea : a novel
by Isabel Allende

From the author of The House of the Spirits comes this epic novel spanning decades and crossing continents as it follows two young people as they flee the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War in search of a place to call home.
Love in the time of cholera
by Gabriel Garcâia Mâarquez

In their youth, Florentino Ariza and Fermina Daza fall passionately in love. When Fermina eventually chooses to marry a wealthy, well-born doctor, Florentino is devastated, but he is a romantic. As he rises in his business career he whiles away the years in 622 affairs--yet he reserves his heart for Fermina. Her husband dies at last, and Florentino purposefully attends the funeral. Fifty years, nine months, and four days after he first declared his love for Fermina, he will do so again.
Solito : a memoir
by Javier Zamora

When Javier Zamora was nine, he traveled unaccompanied by bus, boat, and foot from El Salvador to the United States to reunite with his parents. This is his memoir of that dangerous journey, a nine-week odyssey that nearly ended in calamity on multiple occasions. It's a miracle that Javier survived the crossing and a miracle that he has the talent to now tell his story so masterfully. While Solito is Javier's story, it's also the story of millions of others who have risked so much to come to this country. A memoir that reads like a novel, rooted in precise and authentic detail, Solito is destined to be a classic of the immigration experience.
