What's happening at the library in November? |
It's Our 25th Anniversary! Even though library services have been available in Forsyth County in some form or another since the 1920s when "Aunt Laura" Hockenhull shared her private library with the public, Forsyth County Public Library as we know it today was created only 25 years ago. From one library in 1996 to four (soon to be five) branches and a state-of-the-art Bookmobile today, we sure have come a long way in just 25 years! With over 10 million library visits and more than 46 million items checked out, we certainly have a lot to celebrate. But what spurred us to break apart from the Gwinnett-Forsyth Regional Library and form our own single-county library system in 1996? According to longtime FCPL Board Chairman Mary Helen McGruder, "It started over a book, as many things do." You'll definitely want to hear the rest of that riveting story on our most recent episode of Unreadable, the official podcast of FCPL. Be sure to visit your local library this month to see the beautiful displays our librarians have created to celebrate our silver anniversary. From a towering 3D cardboard cake at Post Road to entire walls covered with birthday wishes from our littlest patrons at Sharon Forks, our staff have gone above and beyond (like always) to help us celebrate 25 years as an independent library system. Stay tuned next month for another special surprise to help us commemorate our 25th anniversary with a little piece of history you can keep in your wallet or on your keychain! |

Thanksgiving Break Reading Fun
|
|
Give Thanks For Books this Thanksgiving with our first ever Thanksgiving Break Reading Fun challenge for ages 0-18. Kids and teens are encouraged to read for pleasure over Thanksgiving Break and participate in fun activities like giving someone a helping hand or performing a random act of kindness. We'll be using Beanstack again to log books and activities. Each reader who earns 100 points will receive an “I Love Reading” bracelet and the opportunity to win one of our grand prize Family Fun Baskets. Don’t have a Beanstack account yet? Click here to create one. Thanksgiving Break Reading Fun registration will begin on November 19 and readers will have until December 1 to log books and earn points. |

Make the Switch to Libby, by OverDrive

OverDrive has recently announced the OverDrive app will no longer be available for download from various popular app stores after January 2022. Patrons who have already downloaded and used the OverDrive app before February 2022 will still be able to use the app. However, the app will no longer be updated or repaired by OverDrive. We are recommending that you switch to the Libby app or use the OverDrive website through a web browser. If you're a Sci-Fi buff, don't miss our curated book lists of recommended Sci-Fi reads for adults, teens, and kids. Use your library card to place a hold on a new book to enjoy this month. Sci-Fi fans and writers will also enjoy our upcoming Forsyth Writes Together program, Using Science in Your Science Fiction with Dystopian Sci-Fi author J.M. Tomkins. She'll share how she uses current science research in her novels to create all-too-possible plots. |
