| It's Library Card Sign-Up MonthSeptember is Library Card-Sign Up Month! If you're a fan of the library, we'd love you to encourage your friends, family, and co-workers to sign up for a free card this month. Here are 10 of our favorite reasons to have a library card:
1. Check out books, DVDs, CDs, and magazines. You can also use your card to download magazines eBooks, eAudiobooks, and eMagazines. Plus, no late fees—we are fine free!
2. Take the internet with you. You can check out a hotspot to use anytime, anywhere. Hotspots can be borrowed for 1 month and can connect up to 10 devices at a time.
3. Read a newspaper. Whether you want to read a local or international newspaper or dig into archives of the past, we have paper copies here at the library as well as databases to access your favorite editions of the Pioneer Press, Star Tribune, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and more.
4. Grow your business. Libraries are places for innovators. Grow your business or sharpen your career skills with job resources such as LinkedIn Learning or JobNow. Use library spaces, Wi-Fi, and printers to work away from the office or away from home.
5. Gaze at the stars. Explore the universe with a library telescope kit. Borrow a reflector telescope to experience detailed views of the moon or search for celestial objects.
6. Tackle vehicle maintenance and repairs. Find online automotive repair and maintenance guidance with ALLDATA Repair.
7. Host your own book club. Want to start your own book club? Choose from a large selection of book club kits. Each kit contains 10 copies of a title along with a discussion guide available for a six-week checkout. You can even reserve library space to hold your meeting. Just add readers!
8. Learn a new language. Learn a few key phrases for an upcoming trip abroad or become fluent in another language with Transparent Language or Mango Languages.
9. Get help with homework. Get assistance with a tough assignment or dive deeper into a topic with our homework resources. There's even free online tutoring.
10. Discover your family history. Uncover your family history with Ancestry Library Edition and FamilySearch. Research your Stillwater ancestors using the library’s St. Croix Collection.
11. (Bonus reason) If you register for a new library card in September, you’ll receive a coupon for a free book from the Friends of Stillwater Public Library ongoing used book sale shelf on the lower level of the library!

Mystery Writing Contest for Youth
Calling all young writers ages 8-12. Enter our mystery writing contest based on Long Lost, a middle-grade novel by Minnesota Book Award Winner, Jacqueline West! Choose one of Jacqueline’s writing prompts from below, write a short story, and submit it to us. Stories should be original work by the writer and should be no more than 2000 words. All stories must be submitted to the library by the twelfth stroke of midnight on Friday, October 13.
Jacqueline West and our youth services librarian will choose a grand prize winner to receive their own personalized, autographed copy of Long Lost, and their story published on the library’s webpage. Runner-ups will receive signed copies of The Collectors, the first of a duology written by Jacqueline, and their stories published on the library’s webpage.
Writing Prompt #1 Begin with the first sentence of the book-within-a-book in Long Lost – “Once there were two sisters who did everything together. But only one of them disappeared.” Imagine a story of your own featuring a mysterious disappearance. Feel free to change sisters to brothers or siblings.
Writing Prompt #2 Imagine that you’re in the library of your dreams – maybe it’s grand and beautiful, or shadowy and mysterious, or cozy and filled with cats. Maybe it’s a library for books, or maybe it’s a library for another type of collection: music, toys, clothes, artifacts. While wandering through its rooms, you find a strange object on one of the shelves. What is it, and where does it lead you?
Meet Jaqueline West Mark your calendars to meet award-winning author Jacqueline West during her author visit on Thursday, October 26 from 6 – 7:30 PM. The Mystery Writing Contest winner and runner-ups will be publicly announced at this event. Readers of all ages are welcome to attend. You are not required to attend if you submit a story, but we hope you will!

| Using Tags in Libby |
With the library's reading app, Libby, you can use tags to organize your reading lists. Tag books you want to read, making lists of books to share with friends, or track audiobooks that you've already read. Tags are easy to see and manage on your Libby Shelf. You can filter tags by availability, too! Here are just a few Libby tag ideas:
To Be Read ListWe love books, but there can be so many to read that you just can't get to them all right away. A "To Be Read" tag can help you keep track of all those books you may want to eventually dive into but don't have time for today. It's also a great way to hold book ideas for a specific time or purpose, such as audiobooks to listen to during a fall road trip.
Magazine Subscriptions
Do you like to read magazines? Set up a smart tag in Libby to be notified when new issues of your favorite magazines are available.
Book Recommendations
You can also use Libby tags to keep track of books suggested by family or by your friendly library staff. You could even use it to note favorite reads you'd recommend to friends. Tags are a great way to remember which books you think your book club may enjoy. If you want to easily share your lists, you can export the tag.
We love the convenience of Libby and want you to have access to all of the free resources it offers. Stop in, call, or send an email with your questions and we’ll help make sure you’re getting the most out of Libby when reading and listening to digital materials.

Rattlesnake Curve |
Pictured on this postcard is Rattlesnake Curve. Streetcars ran in Stillwater from 1889 to 1932 and were an extension of the Twin Cities Rapid Transit Company's streetcar lines. This view shows the streetcar as it headed west along the south side of Lake McKusick. Rattlesnake Curve was towards the southwest end of the lake, near present-day Kallie Court.
The library has a large collection of historical postcards depicting scenes and landmarks from in and around Stillwater. View the collection any time the library is open in the Saint Croix Collection Room.
