Stop by the gallery on the upper level of Stillwater Public Library for a retrospective by artist Erik Sletten. "This retrospective covers more than 28 years of my professional work as an artist. I have a love for architecture, cars, movies, and so much more. Many of these pieces are on loan from clients and collectors of my art, as well as works from my personal collection. I have been a resident of Stillwater for my entire career and much of my art portrays my visions of my hometown,” explains Sletten.
For nearly 30 years, Sletten has been productive as a painter using oil and acrylics. The art he creates is rendered in a pop-expressionistic manner. Sletten notes, “My work is colorful and happy, seeking to remind us that there are good things in the world…the goodness in life. In painting, I create a narrative in which common objects are brought to life, inspiring a sense of joy. Fracturing perspective creates a whimsical feel, and I use a wrapped canvas so the image can continue around the edges of the piece. Creating a personal work of art is my response to an individual sharing the essence of their life. Painting becomes an artistic expression of that life, and also represents a moment in time.”
Sletten's work will be on exhibit in the gallery through September. Meet Erik Sletten on Thursday, July 13 at the library during a reception from 5-8 PM, featuring live music by Justin Roth. “Fans of Leo Kottke or Michael Hedges will find themselves right at home with [Roth’s] intricate guitar work…beautifully written lyrics.”– San Francisco Art Magazine

Stillwater Street Fair, Circa 1901-1909 |
Here's another favorite from the library's collection of Frederick Holcombe photos: a street fair in downtown Stillwater. Do you see the band in the bottom left under the "Dance Here" banner? The photo by David Lundin dates between 1901-1909.
Stop into the library to view the collection or browse online at Minnesota Digital Library.

"This book has my heart! So glad I took the chance on it! I started it shortly before I was planning to go to bed, intending on just reading the first couple chapters, and ended up staying up until 4 am to finish it. This book is beautiful, moving, and so enjoyable, with a depth you'd never expect by looking at the cover. I wanted to just sit with it for a few minutes when I was done with it, holding it to my chest, soaking it all up, breathing it in, and appreciating all it was. This book both wrecks and heals you at the same time. It's a gem and I am so glad I found it!"
