NATIONAL INDIGENOUS HISTORY MONTH
Ways you can honour National Indigenous History Month
 
1. Learn about the lasting impact of the residential school system in Canada. This list includes books and movies for Adults, Teens and Children. Support is available for anyone affected by the lingering effects of residential schools, and those who are triggered by the latest reports. The IRSSS can be contacted toll-free at 1-800-721-0066.
 
2. Attend a virtual event with Jesse Thistle, author of From the Ashes: My Story of Being Métis, Homeless, and Finding my Way at the Mir Centre for Peace on June 2nd.
 
3. Join the From the Heart Learning Circle, a Library group committed to listening and learning from Indigenous voices mainly through a book study. Email hgoldik@nelson.ca to get more info.
 
4. Check out these suggestions for personal acts of reconciliation
 
5. Watch this video, From the Heart: Fire & Flow, an arts based  project that brought together youth in our area to build community, learn about Indigenous culture and contribute to the dialogue that can move social justice forward in our communities.
 
6. Encourage your book club to read fiction, non-fiction and memoir by an Indigenous author and borrow one of our book club sets.
 
7. Check out the Indigenous People page on our website for more resources, information and learning opportunities both locally and beyond.

The Nelson Library is excited to be a co-host for the Elephant Mountain Literary Festival Keynote with Cheryl Foggo.
 
Cheryl Foggo is an award-winning writer of fiction, non-fiction, poetry and plays; she has also written for TV and film. As a descendant of the migration of Black Oklahomans who settled in Amber Valley, Alberta, and Maidstone, Saskatchewan in 1910, Cheryl is well known for her work uncovering the stories of Alberta’s early Black pioneers.
