Preparing for a New Chapter:
The library will be preparing for a new chapter in 2024. After nearly ten years with the Radium Library, Jan, our Assistant Library Director, has made the decision to retire. Her last day at the Library will be December 30th, and our current Library Assistant Emilie will be stepping into the position of Assistant Library Director in the New Year.
Jan began her tenure at the Radium Library in 2014 as a dedicated volunteer. She was hired as a library employee in 2018 and became the Assistant Library Director in January of 2019.
Her contributions to the library have been invaluable; she is a pillar of the community and a true library advocate. As a volunteer Jan was instrumental in assisting with the move to the new facility. She also helped in-library to provide programs and maintain services.
Jan’s role as Assistant Director encompassed many departments; she facilitated and developed library programs, operated the circulation desk, assisted with collection development and cataloguing, trained staff and volunteers, assisted with reference questions, and managed the interlibrary loan department. Jan is well known for her innovative children’s programming and for creating a welcoming and inclusive space for children in the library. She developed many of our staple programs and services, including (but definitely not limited to): launching the STEAM and seasonal craft programs, organizing and facilitating the annual Summer Reading Club program and Teddy Bear Picnic, hosting Field Trips, establishing a Lego and craft table, and spearheading the Annual Easter Egg Hunt – where she made each egg by hand and spent countless hours planning and preparing for the annual event.
Congratulations on your retirement Jan, the library would not be where it is today without you, and we are truly appreciative of all that you have done. You will be deeply missed, and our little library family will not be the same without you! Thank you!

The Radon Library lending program is provided free to library patrons through support from Health Canada, the BC Lung Association, Simon Fraser University and the Kootenay Library Federation. The Kits are available for four-week loans.
Radon gas comes from naturally occurring uranium in soils and rocks and some regions in Canada have more uranium than others. Radon levels in homes can be elevated but it is impossible to tell unless you test as the gas is odourless, tasteless and colourless.
You can place a hold on our website, call, or email us to add your name to the holds list. Unfortunately our system had a glitch, and holds made on the kit before March 2020 were not saved, so if you placed a hold previously, you will need to add it
Click here to find the radon kit in our catalogue. Click “place hold” be put on the waitlist for the radon lending kit. Please call the library if you have any questions.
