Being the manager of an autistic person can be a challenging experience. Not because your autistic employee is difficult to deal with or a problem, but rather because so few managers are experienced in what it means to manage someone on the spectrum. Chances are, you’ve never done it before and it can be quite the learning curve. The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) provides for the employment of certain individuals at wage rates below the minimum wage. Also included are individuals whose earning or productive capacity is impaired by a physical or mental disability, including those related to age or injury, for the work to be performed.
