Did You Know? Tundras are level or rolling treeless plains found in cold regions, mostly north of the Arctic Circle or above the timberline on high mountains or the alpine tundra. Tundras take up roughly 10% of the Earth's surface. The Alpine tundra, which only occurs at high elevations where temperatures are too low, and winds are too strong for the growth of trees, is roughly 3% of the Earth's surface. FUN FACT: Because of the ice that covers almost all of Antarctica it lacks a well-developed tundra.
