Did You Know?
American Fork Library’s longest working employee retires November 1. Kathy Goodwin has been at the library for almost 49 years! She started back in high school on the recommendation of her junior high librarian. Kathy has been a wonderful asset to the American Fork Library ever since.
Kathy’s primary job is cataloging the collection. That means every item on our shelves was organized, labeled, and cataloged by Kathy or someone she directly taught. Since we add approximately 8,000 items per year, that means Kathy could have cataloged 392,000 individual items over her career! She is the reason you are able to get new books so quickly.
Kathy's additional responsibilites include serving as the library’s Assistant Director, processing donations, organizing the bookstore, and regularly cleaning up catalog mistakes. Since joining the library staff, Kathy has worked with 7 library directors. She served as interim director several times.
American Fork Library is grateful to Kathy Goodwin for her many decades of hard work, organization, and staff support. We wish her all the best in her upcoming retirement. |

Set against the backdrop of Jim Crow, this book takes readers behind the curtain of one of music's greatest untold stories during the era of segregation and Civil Rights. Taking place during one of the most tumultuous times in US history, it explores how one city, divided into two completely different and unequal communities, demonstrated the power of music to change the world. |

| Emily Bowen Cohen |
Mia is still getting used to living with her mom and stepfather, and to the new role their Jewish identity plays in their home. Feeling out of place at home and at her Jewish day school, Mia finds herself thinking more and more about her Muscogee father, who lives with his new family in Oklahoma. Her mother doesn't want to talk about him, but Mia can't help but feel like she's missing a part of herself without him in her life. Soon, Mia makes a plan to use the gifts from her bat mitzvah to take a bus to Oklahoma--without telling her mom--to visit her dad and find the connection to her Muscogee side she knows is just as important as her Jewish side.

"The library was the special place I could always take my kids to explore when our family struggled financially. It let me satisfy a longing for new things and experiences I couldn’t get with money. Access to services you don’t have to pay for let me experience a moment of dignity in a world where nearly everything depends on whether or not you have enough money." |
