The American Fork Library and Library Board are delighted to announce that starting July 1, 2021, we will no longer be charging overdue fines! Here is why we are so excited to make this change:
1. Those who use the library the most were the ones with the highest late fees. We have been fining our own biggest fans for visiting us so much, loving books, and wanting to learn.
2. To collect overdue fines, our library paid over $11,000 a year on staff time. We spent hours every day looking up charges, sending out fine notices, and working with you on payment plans. In that time, we took in around $2,500 in late fees. It doesn’t make financial sense to keep it up.
3. We just want our books back—we don’t want to punish you once you’ve returned them. Lots of people hold on to books out of fear of what their fines will look like. The only reason you will be charged is if you lose, damage, or keep our materials indefinitely, and then it’s only the cost of replacement.
Our library’s mission is to make a positive, transformative difference in the lives of all those we serve. By eliminating fines, we can focus more on bringing good to our community. We want to help you, not hassle you about fines. Thanks to the American Fork City Council for approving this change and allowing us to do what we do best.
