A Postcard Presentation & Poetry Reading with Alice Kociemba & Jennifer Rose Join us on Saturday, April 1st at 2pm in the Hermann room as Alice Kociemba, the founding director of Calliope Poetry for Community, presents a slide show of a curated selection from the historical postcard collection of the Falmouth Public Library and describes the goals of the project Wish You Were Here: Postcards from the Past. Jennifer Rose will then read a selection of her postcard poems from Hometown for an Hour, and will describe the process of crafting postcard poems that create through their brevity an immediate connection to a specific place. “When the great blizzard of 1888 crippled the entire northeast … Two brothers from one of the nation’s great families – Henry Melville Whitney of Boston and William Collins Whitney of New York – pursued the dream of his city digging America’s first subway, and the great race was on. The competition between Boston and New York played our in an era not unlike our own, one of economic upheaval, life-changing innovations, class warfare, bitter political tensions, and the question of America’s place in the world.”
