As July 4th approaches, some of us will be looking forward to outdoor barbecues, fireworks, and spending time with family and friends. Others may choose to relax on the beach with a good book and read without interruption. The joy of these choices is that we have them. Things in our world may not be perfect, but we still have the freedom to spend a holiday doing the things we choose to do. |
|
|
When it comes to reading and access to books, this is not always the case. Recently, there has been an increase in the number of books challenged by organized groups who do not agree with an author's view or a book's content. These groups seek to make choices for others regarding what they should or should not be allowed to read, disregarding individuality and preference. Having the freedom to read is not only a privilege but also a right and one we should uphold and celebrate along with the birthday of this nation.
Libraries have been in existence since the days of Benjamin Franklin. Then and now, the library has been a place to find information, materials, and resources of all kinds. Today the public library is open to all, and the books are available to everyone. You may not agree with every opinion, theme, or writing style found in a book; however, finding commonality and having the freedom to celebrate diversity through literature is a fundamental part of being American.
Happy 4th of July! Christina Ryan-Linder Library Director | New at GPL! |

| | | Every Summer, there is a concern that children may experience the academic summer slide while school is out of session. The summer slide is the tendency for kids to forget the reading they learned in the past school semester during the summer months. By not reading consistently, a child can lose up to a whole grade level's worth of skills during a short period. This makes it harder for students to regain lost ground when they return to school in the fall.
The best way to overcome the summer slide and keep kids' brains in the game is to practice reading every day, even if it is just for a few minutes a day. A great way to do this is to join the Summer Reading Program at the library. Making reading fun and easy through the Bingo Card Reading Challenge can help keep your child engaged and excited about reading all summer long. - Going on a long road trip? Download a few audiobooks to your phone from the library's Libby or CloudLibrary collections and listen to fantastic stories on the way to your destination.
- Staying local? Check out a Museum Pass and provide a no-cost/low-cost adventure for the whole family.
- Looking for something for adults? Join Adult Summer Reading, it's not just for kids.

| Children from birth to rising 5th graders are welcome to take part in our Summer Reading Community Project. You can help grow and beautify your local park just by reading this summer! And you can win a fantastic prize!
How does it work? It's easy: Sign up, either in-person or online, and pick up a BINGO card at the library.Start reading! When you complete an activity on the BINGO card (for example: read outside, act out a scene from a book, read to a plant), mark it off. When you've completed all the activities on the BINGO card, return it to the library. For every card you return, a seed packet will be donated to the new Community Garden in Yosemite Park. You will also get a chance to win the Grand Prize: a Family Season Pass to the Bronx Zoo! If you complete the BINGO Card before the deadline of August 15, you can choose to do another one. And another. And another! The more you read, the more seeds go to the park, and the more chances you have to win!

Adults
| The adult summer reading challenge is a two-month, self-directed reading opportunity for adults to venture outside their comfort zone. Use the challenge squares and shake up your reading routine to discover new genres, formats, or authors. Complete three challenge squares to be eligible for the prize drawing.
There’s one great prize, a one-year, guest membership to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, funded by the Friends of the Greenburgh Library. The more entry forms you complete the more chances of winning the prize.
Each challenge square represents a different category chosen by the Greenburgh Public Library staff. Participants will record each title read in the appropriate square, starting June 15th and ending August 15, 2023. Book titles can be used only one time. Each entry form requires three new titles.
You can download the entry form or pick one up at the library. For more information and suggested titles visit the library’s For Readers website. |
