Your Library is More Than Books!
Transitional Readers

What is a Transitional Reader?
  • They have passed the early stages of reading and are ready for short chapter books and nonfiction books with longer paragraphs
  • They can decode unknown words and rely less on illustrations
  • They are more aware of story structure
  • They have an established large bank of vocabulary words
  • Most readers enter this stage in 2nd grade
  • This includes children ages 6-10, grades 2nd-4th, and/or reading level I-M

How can I help my Transitional Reader?

*  Provide a variety of fiction and nonfiction books...maybe a trip to the library is in order where you can check out up to 100 books with no late fees on children's books

*  Encourage daily writing practice such as a journal to help with reading and comprehension

*  Teach children to self-monitor as they read by continually checking that everything makes sense....talk about what to do when something doesn't make sense

*  Teach children to regain comprehension by encouraging rereading in spots, and help with clarifying words they don't know by looking at word parts and breaking them down

*   Teach children to predict and infer by asking questions about the reading, looking at what a text says and then deciding what they think it means, and by making connections to their own lives
