Summer Reading Kickoff!! Monday, July 8 at 11:00 am Join us for a fun time with lawn games, snacks and more! Sign up for the summer reading program and pick up your reading log. Everyone who attends will also get a special gift. This summer's theme is "Read, Renew, Repeat". We are doing something different this year -- rather than getting prizes for time spent reading, kids will earn votes for an animal, and at the end of the summer we will make a donation to Heifer International to give the winning animal to a family in need. This is a drop in program for all ages; no registration required.

As Mamasteph, she has a vast and loyal audience throughout the South Shore of Massachusetts. Her performances at area libraries, preschools, daycare centers, and private functions are enjoyable and enlightening for both audiences and the performer. Her interactive show allows her to weave her skills as a mother of five grown children and grandmother of ten, with her musical and creative talents for a delightful and positive experience. Ed the Wizard Friday, July 19 at 11:00 am Reading is Magic is a hands-on performance that uses many volunteers, featuring a unique blend of some new, a few favorites, and some "recycled" routines. In keeping with the summer reading theme "Read, Renew, Repeat", it includes some effects that involve everyday recycling, and, of course, revisiting your favorite books and stories! For all ages. Animal World Experience Thursday, July 25 at 1:00 pm Matt Gabriel will bring a selection of live animals of different species, and explain to the audience about their lives, habitats, and personalities. Read to Lainey Wednesday, July 31 at 3:00 pm Officer Mike McKeever and Lainey the Comfort Dog will visit the library. Children can visit with her and learn about her job, and books will be available for those who would like to read to her. This is a drop-in event, no registration needed.

VIRTUAL: Armchair Travel to Barcelona, Spain Tuesday, July 2 at 10:30 am Over 19 million visitors a year come to Barcelona for its vibrant culture, architectural marvels, beautiful beaches, amazing food and much more. See the sights from a recent visit, and also learn how history and geography make the Catalan region unlike any other part of Spain. Led by Gene Flynn, an Illinois native, who has taught at the College of Lake County and Harper College, and serves on the board of the Institute for Continued Learning at Roosevelt University. The History of the North & South Rivers and the NSRWA Tuesday, July 2 at 6:30 pm The North River is the first Scenic Protected River in Massachusetts and the North and South Rivers were designated a National Natural Landmark by the National Park Service. This presentation is an overview of the natural events that lead to what the Rivers are today. It includes a brief history of the shipbuilding industry from the mid 1600’s to the mid 1800’s. VIRTUAL: Author Talk with Kathryn Brewster Haueisen, Mary Brewster's Love Life Tuesday, July 2 at 7:00 pm 18 wives accompanied their husbands on the 1620 Mayflower voyage. Only four were still alive a year later. Mary Brewster, wife of Elder William Brewster, was one of them. Being the oldest woman in the community, she took in orphaned children, widowed young adults, and nursed the sick as best she could in their dire living conditions. Learn what is what like for Mary and the other women on their historic voyage to America. Led by Kathryn Haueisen, the author of seven books, including Mary Brewster’s Love Life: Matriarch of the Mayflower and Mayflower Chronicles: The Tale of Two Cultures. Haueisen is the descendant of Mayflower passengers, including Mary Brewster, and has conducted extensive research on her life. Personalize your flowers with a selection of beads and sequins. Bring them to life with a stem that delicately balances the flowers. Kusudama flowers, a modular type of origami, are crafted from individually folded pieces of paper, before being assembled together. This month, travel to Chios, an island in the eastern Aegean, which captivates with its diverse landscapes and rich history. A favorite late summer ritual for many nature-lovers is watching for Common Nighthawks in the late afternoon and evening skies. Both birds are aerial insectivores - birds that catch insects on the fly. Monday, July 15 at 7:00 pm You know them as the Two Nerdy History Girls -- authors Loretta Chase and Susan Holloway Scott were the originators of the infamous blog. We have Loretta and Susan here to answer all of our burning questions. How do they find interesting tidbits of historical lore, which libraries of the world have they visited, and how do they avoid the inescapable "rabbit hole"? We can't wait for what we know is going to be a fascinating conversation between these two friends and researchers. VIRTUAL: Author Talk with James L. Parr, World War II Massachusetts Tuesday, July 16 at 7:00 pm Author James L. Parr will discuss his new book, World War II Massachusetts. Over 500,000 Massachusetts residents answered the call to military duty in the Second World War, while the rest of the state's citizens fought the war on the home front. Everyone in the family, including pets, found creative and essential ways to contribute. Thousands worked in factories, volunteered for Civil Defense, watched for enemy aircraft, and took part in salvage collections and bond drives, all while dealing with rationing, blackouts, rumors and a host of other wartime inconveniences. And while thousands of service members left to fight overseas, the Bay State also welcomed thousands more to serve on its military bases that were such an important part of our nation's defense. VIRTUAL: Paris 1874 - Inventing Impressionism Thursday, July 18 at 10:30 am On 15 April 1874, in Paris, an exhibition opened that would launch one of the most famous artistic movements in the world: impressionism. For the first time, Monet, Renoir, Degas, Morisot, Pissarro, Cezanne and Sisley came together independently to exhibit their work: light-filled, colorful paintings, conveying fleeting impressions with a brisk and lively touch. In doing so, these artists distanced themselves from the official Salon, the major official exhibition that dominated the Paris artistic life, and the guardian of academic tradition. Author Talk: Lee McColgan, A House Restored Wednesday, July 24 at 6:30 pm Author Lee McColgan discusses his book, A House Restored: The Tragedies and Triumphs of Saving a New England Colonial. Old houses share their secrets only if they survive. Trading the corporate ladder for a stepladder, Lee McColgan commits to preserving the ramshackle Loring House, built in 1702, using period materials and methods and on a holiday deadline.
