Sing to Your Baby with Julie Stepanek Friday, August 2 at 1:00 pm Sing To Your Baby is a participatory music program for children 0-3 and their caregivers. This program features fingerplays, singable songs and integrated movement. It can be upbeat or laid-back, depending on the audience. Julie provides shakers, scarves and percussive instruments and leads with ukulele and voice. Please register on our calendar, as space is limited. Funded by the Friends of the John Curtis Library.

Story-Time Monday mornings, August 5, 12, 19 & 26 at 10:15 am Picture books, big books, flannel board stories, rhymes with movement, and more for children 3 & 4 years old. Caregivers generally do not accompany children. Drop-in, no registration needed.

Patty-Cake for Babies Friday, August 16 at 11:00 am Nursery rhymes with movement, board books, finger plays and more for babies newborn to 17 months with a parent/caregiver. Drop-in, no registration needed.

PJ Storytime Tuesday nights, August 6, 13, 20 & 27 at 7:00 pm Put on your pajamas, grab a favorite stuffed animal, and join us for a half-hour of bedtime stories. Drop-in, no registration needed.

Toddler Time Wednesday mornings, August 7, 14, 21, 28 at 10:15 am Simple picture books, big books, finger plays, songs and movement for children 18-35 months with a parent/caregiver. Drop-in, no registration needed.

MamaSteph Tuesday, August 13 at 3:30 pm Beloved local performer Stephanie Chase will sing familiar children's songs as well as some of her own compositions. She also brings some special puppets. Drop in, no registration needed. Funded by the Friends of the John Curtis Library.

Playful Engineers Friday, August 16 at 10:30 am In this STEM focused workshop, participants design, build, test, and play with chain reactions and creative contraptions, like Rube Goldberg Machines, paper constructions, domino towers, exploding popsicle-stick snakes, and other awesome engineering explorations.

Outdoor Art Installation: Wizard of Oz! Check out our Wizard of Oz outdoor art installation on the grounds by the children's garden. It was crafted by members of the Plymouth Antiquarian Society, was previously on display near the Plymouth waterfront. It has now been graciously donated to our library. Ask at the children's room desk for a poppy to add to the creation!

Author Talk with John Galluzzo Monday, August 12 at 6:30 pm "Baby, it's hot outside!" ;-> So, let's think snow! Join Hanover Historical Society president and local history author John Galluzzo for a chilly journey through winters of yore and the way they affected the people of the "Moon Village at the End of the Earth," the residents of Hull Village at the end of the Nantasket peninsula. What a great way to cool off!

Nature & Novels Wednesdays Wednesday Evenings (August 7, 14, 21 & 28), at 6:00 pm Join us EVERY Wednesday night this summer to read outdoors - unwind in our silent book club! BONUS: If you join us, you'll earn a coupon toward a free ice cream during our Finale, taking place on Wednesday, August 28! Be a part of Adult Summer Reading! VIRTUAL: The Quiet & Colorful World of Vermeer Thursday, August 1, 10:30 am Johannes Vermeer, who created the iconic painting “Girl with A Pearl Earring,” is considered a world renowned Dutch Master of the 17th century. That painting is one of only 37 works of his that scholars believe survive today. For the first time ever, 28 of those 37 were exhibited in 2023 at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Learn the latest insights into this beloved but enigmatic artist. Led by art historian Mary Woodward, a guide at several Historic New England properties. She previously served as Public Programs Coordinator and Educator at the Concord Museum. VIRTUAL: Adult Trivia Night Friday, August 2, 7:00 pm Test your knowledge by answering 60 trivia questions (four rounds of 15) created by librarian and trivia host extraordinaire Kat Lewin. Recruit some teammates or play solo -- the choice is yours! Be prepared to answer a hodgepodge of general knowledge trivia questions. That's right, for just the second time in four years, we're going theme-less, so buckle up! VIRTUAL: Armchair Travel to French Wine Regions Tuesday, August 6, 10:30 am France has 17 different wine regions, each with unique wines, history, and a strong cultural identity. Explore the sites and wines of Provence, Cote du Rhone, and Burgundy. The wines are excellent, and the residents are very welcoming. Led by Gene Flynn, an Illinois native, who has taught at the College of Lake County and Harper College, and serves on the board of the Institute for Continued Learning at Roosevelt University. He frequently gives travel presentations to libraries and senior centers around the country. Her book "Lula Dean's Little Library of Banned Books" is a provocative and hilarious summer read that will have book lovers cheering and everyone talking! Kirsten Miller, author of 'The Change', brings us a bracing, wildly entertaining satire about a small Southern town, a pitched battle over banned books, and a little lending library that changes everything. VIRTUAL: Armchair Travel to Corsica Tuesday, August 13 at 10:30 am Travel to Corsica, the jewel of the Mediterranean. Mountains and beaches beckon travelers. Politically, it is a French Department. Historically, it is tied to Genoa. Corsica is a free spirit in the Ligurian Sea with a French Mediterranean flavor and a Genoese nod. The combination of culture and scenery make it a very interesting destination. Led by Jack Holmes, a travel photographer and owner of "Images From Near and Far" at Western Avenue Studios in Lowell. A retired high school teacher, he previously served as President of the Greater Lynn Photographic Association and Gallery Manager of the Loading Dock Gallery in Lowell. VIRTUAL: How to Improve Your Recycling Tuesday, August 13 at 12:00 noon Julia Greene, Municipal Assistance Coordinator from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, will discuss how to cut down on waste and how to recycle correctly. Julia will give practical advice on how you can improve your efforts to reduce, re-use and recycle in your day-to-day life in order to make a positive impact on our environment. VIRTUAL: Bald Eagles on the Rise Wednesday, August 14 at 10:30 am The Bald Eagle, formerly endangered, now has a thriving population over much of the country including the northeast. Learn the natural history and life cycle of bald eagle as well as the historic restoration project in Massachusetts resulting in a healthy population and removal of endangered species status. Eagles are seen in the northeast throughout the year, and during fall migration you might be fortunate to see a non-nesting golden eagle. Led by Patti Steinman, the Education Coordinator for Mass Audubon’s Connecticut River Valley Sanctuaries, based out of Arcadia in Easthampton and Northampton. She has worked at Mass Audubon for 30 years, developing and overseeing programs for adults, families, and children.

VIRTUAL: Summer Adventures - Art Colonies in New England Thursday, August 15 at 10:30 am Explore eight late-19th and early-20th century summer art colonies across New England: Provincetown and Cape Ann in MA; North Conway and Cornish in NH; Old Lyme and Cos Cob in CT; and Ogunquit and Monhegan Island in ME. Discover the incredible, creative energy that still exists in these art colonies in New England. Led by Martha Chiarchiaro, owner of Seeing History, who has brought history to life through the art of the times for more than 30 years. She received her Masters’ degree in the History of Art from Williams College and provides a variety of art history presentations at the Worcester Art Museum, the Worcester Institute for Senior Education (WISE), libraries, senior centers, and garden clubs. VIRTUAL: Author Talk with Sean O'Connell, Bruce Willis Monday, August 19 at 7:00 pm On a nondescript Wednesday morning in the waning days of March 2023, one of the biggest movie stars on the planet called it quits. No press conference had been organized -- instead, the news that Bruce Willis was retiring from acting came in a simple statement on his ex-wife Demi Moore’s Instagram page—along with the tragic news that Willis was suffering from aphasia, a cognitive disorder that subsequently worsened to become frontotemporal dementia.
