Chess Club Monday, June 3 and June 17 at 6:00 pm Doug Southall leads a chess club for children age six and older, approximately every two weeks. Each meeting will begin with a brief lesson, followed by free play. Please note: Chess Club will be taking a break for July and August, and will be back in September.

VIRTUAL: Armchair Travel to Barcelona, Spain Tuesday, June 4 at 10:30 am Over 19 million visitors a year come to Barcelona for its vibrant culture, architectural marvels, beautiful beaches, amazing food and much more. See the sights from a recent visit, and also learn how history and geography make the Catalan region unlike any other part of Spain. Led by Gene Flynn, an Illinois native, who has taught at the College of Lake County and Harper College, and serves on the board of the Institute for Continued Learning at Roosevelt University. IN PERSON: Timing the Tides: A Guide to Paddling on the North and South Rivers Tuesday, June 4 at 6:30 pm Presented by the North and South Rivers Watershed Association! It's for people who enjoy kayaking, canoeing and paddle boarding and want to know how to time the tides to safely paddle at several locations on the North, South and Herring Rivers. We’ll cover where to launch and how to safely paddle in these beautiful waterways. The presentation includes practical information for paddlers of all experience levels.

VIRTUAL: Impressionists - Imaging the Modern Thursday, June 6 at 10:30 am 2024 is the 150th anniversary of the First Impressionist Exhibition, held in Paris in 1874. But many don’t know that the Impressionists and their avant-garde works were initially reviled by the critics and rejected by the public. Learn the compelling story of how this beloved art movement was born and why it flourished. View some of the favorite paintings, as well as others that will be new to you. Led by Janet Mandel, a retired 32-year art history teacher.

VIRTUAL: Author Talk with Caitlin Cass Monday, June 10 at 7:00 pm We hope you can join us for what is going to be a fascinating conversation with author Caitlin Cass on her book, "Suffrage Song: The Haunted History of Gender, Race and Voting Rights in the U.S." Part graphic novel, part map of the suffrage movement, this book tells the story of the fight for the right to vote by women from the very beginning. VIRTUAL: Armchair Travel to Beijing, China Tuesday, June 11 at 10:30 am Beijing was the dynastic capital of China from the mid-13th century until the fall of the Qing dynasty in 1912. Beijing became the capital of the People's Republic of China in 1949. Explore the places that once belonged to the emperors of China. The traditional Beijing houses, called hutongs, are quickly disappearing to make room for modern high rise buildings. Visit a hutong were people currently live. Explore the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven and the Great Wall. Marvel at the size of Tiananmen Square. Admire the balancing acts of Chinese acrobats. VIRTUAL: Author Talk with Chris Castellani Tuesday, June 11 at 6:30 pm In honor of Pride Month, go behind the scenes of Christopher Castellani's critically-acclaimed novel, Leading Men, which dramatizes the tempestuous relationship between Tennessee Williams, his longtime partner Frank Merlo, and their protégé, an aspiring Swedish actress named Anja Bloom. VIRTUAL: Armchair Travel to Northeastern France Tuesday, June 25 at 10:30 am Explore the magnificent cathedral cities of Reims, Metz, and Strasbourg before heading into the heart of Alsace, with its blend of French and German cultures. Take a van tour along La Route des Vins, through medieval fairytale villages and to the castle of Haut Koenigsbourg in the Vosges Mountains. The trip continues to Mulhouse and its national automobile and railroad museums, the largest in the world. Finally, enjoy a quick train trip to Freiburg in Germany’s Black Forest.
