Patriot's Day -- April 15, 2024

Just a reminder -- we will be closed to honor Patriot's Day on Monday, April 15.  It commemorates the Battles of Lexington and Concord which took place on April 19, 1775 and were the first battles fought in the American Revolutionary War. 2024 will mark the 250th anniversary of the battle!

IN PERSON: Solar Eclipse Party
Monday, April 8 at 3:00 pm
 
Join us as we watch - with special glasses that we'll provide, of course! - the total eclipse of the sun!!  Partial begins at 2:15 pm, but the maximum coverage is due to be at approx. 3:30 pm.  We'll have themed snacks and special prizes for those that participate!
 
Glasses are available for pickup - only 4 to a family, please! - while supplies last.
 
ALSO - the Astronomical Society has a photo display in the large meeting room this month!  Don't miss it!
 
 
 Peep Diorama Contest is BACK!
Month of April, 2024
 
We'll have 3 divisions: children, teens, and adults may enter. We ask that the entries have a book or TV/movie theme. Peeps (one package per entry) will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis starting April 1st, and the deadline to enter your diorama is Friday, April 19.
 
Judging will take place Friday, April 26.  May the best Peeps win!

Pajama Storytime (toddlers)
Tuesday, April 16 at 7:00 pm
 
Put on your pajamas, grab a favorite stuffed animal, and join us for a half-hour of bedtime stories.  All ages welcome, but geared toward toddlers to age 4.
Trevor the Juggler (ages 5-12)
Wednesday, April 17 at 3:00 pm
 
Trevor Pearson, a Cape Cod native, has been juggling professionally for more than twenty years.  He has performed at the library several times in the past.  He always presents an amazing and ridiculously funny show.
 
All ages welcome, most suitable for families with children approximately age 5 to 12.  Registration will open April 1.
Bingo (ages 8-11)
Friday, April 19 at 4:00 pm
 
Have a great time, and win prizes!  Bingo occurs on the third Friday of every month.
Maker Space (ages 6 and up)
Saturday, April 20 from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm
 
Drop in and design and build creations with materials from our fully-loaded Maker Space cart.  For age six and older.

Come hang out with friends, enjoy a snack, and watch a fun movie!  You might even win the door prize!

This month -- Box Clocks!  Turn a wooden or cardboard box into a custom designed clock.  The perfect gift, as Mother's Day and Father's Day are right around the corner!

IN PERSON:  Paint Night 
Tuesday, April 2 at 6:00 pm
 
 
Paint the delicate petals of poppy flowers with watercolor paint, learning how to layer the translucent paint. You'll work on two paintings concurrently to allow time for the layers to dry.

VIRTUAL: Author Talk with Megumi Inouye

We are celebrating the release of Megumi's book, "The Soul of Gift Wrapping: Creative Techniques for Expressing Gratitude, Inspired by the Japanese Art of Giving."  As we approach holidays such as Mother's and Father's Day, learn how to both wrap beautifully and show gratitude for those you are gifting to.

VIRTUAL: Minimizing or Eliminating Food Waste for Families

We'll be discussing how to minimize or eliminate food wastage in your family, especially with kids. Sarah will have all kinds of ideas to take baby steps to save, use, or compost food scraps so none (or little) goes into landfills! All ages are welcome.  Sarah Robertson-Barnes, founder of the Sustainable in the Suburbs blog, is a freelance writer, educator, and consultant.

VIRTUAL: A Brief History of the Coast Guard

Massachusetts is the birthplace of the Coast Guard. Those who have served in the Coast Guard here in Massachusetts have made significant contributions to that history.  Most are aware of the role of the Coast Guard as first responders, law enforcement officers and boating safety experts, but few know that some who serve are oceanographers, combat veterans, arctic explorers and even astronauts.  Join Greg Ketchen, a retired U.S. Coast Guard Captain and a volunteer at the Coast Guard Heritage Museum located in Barnstable’s Old Customs House.

IN PERSON: Stories from the Revolution -- Hanover in the War for Independence

Join Stephen C. O'Neill, Executive Director of the Hanover Historical Society, as he discusses the role that Hanoverians played in the Revolutionary War!  This program, in honor of the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolutionary War, tells the story of Hanover and its residents during the conflict. Using original objects and documents from the Historical Society’s and other collections to illustrate how the War changed the lives of the people of Hanover.

VIRTUAL: Haunted Happenings with Jeff DePaoli - Fear Town & The Factory of Terror

IN PERSON: Galileo, The Starry Messenger

In honor of the solar eclipse earlier this month, Galileo will be visiting!  Almost four hundred years ago, an unknown court mathematician in Italy opened that book and laid the foundation for modern science. Galileo Galilei turned his telescope to the heavens to discover mountains and craters on the moon, four moons of Jupiter, and countless stars never before seen. He taught future scientists the way to discover the laws of nature. 
 
For more than 40 years, actor Mike Francis has been performing throughout North America on stage, film and   television. New England stage appearances include performances at Merrimack Rep, the New Rep, the Charles Playhouse and many other venues.
 
VIRTUAL: Author Talk with C.S. Harris

We are so excited to be chatting with Historical Mystery author, C.S. Harris!  C.S. (aka Candice Proctor) is the prolific writer of the Sebastian St. Cyr series. We're also celebrating the book birthday of the 18th in this series, "Who Cries for the Lost?" - with a title like that, don't you just want to run out and read every book, starting with "What Angels Fear"?

Join us as we welcome Nancy Drew historian Alicia Mello! She has been a fan and collector of Nancy Drew for 20 years, and it shows! She explores the history of Nancy Drew (the sleuth and the physical books!), shares little known facts, & shows some of her collected Nancy Drew items. She also invites you to bring along your own Nancy Drew books so she can evaluate and offer her insight as to the edition and the age of the books.

Friends of the JCFL Corner
 
The Friends regularly assist the Library with financing museum passes and programming.  A recent addition of two suggestion boxes - asking the public for programming suggestions - were placed on the circulation desks.
