Participate in Banned Book Week!!
October 1-7 is Banned Book Week, and we want to call attention to the books that have been challenged over the last year. Help us call attention to this by adding to our FREADom magnet board in our lobby -- tell us what FREADom means to you! This will remain available all month. We're also having a Library Read-In for all ages on Friday, October 6 from 1-3 pm -- cider and donuts provided!! Get 'caught' reading whatever you like in our large meeting room. Can't make it? Join us from work or home, and send us a picture!! Use #LetFreedomRead and #JohnCurtisFreeLibrary to post pictures to social media. We'll be taking pictures and posting, as well. We hope you'll join us!

Picture Book Time (3 & 4 year olds) Monday mornings at 10:15 am Picture books, big books, flannel board stories, rhymes with movement, and more. Caregivers generally do not accompany children. Drop-in, no registration required.

Patty-Cake (babies) Monday mornings at 11:00 am Nursery rhymes with movement, board books, finger plays and more for babies newborn to 17 months with a parent/caregiver. Drop-in, no registration needed.

Children's Yoga (3-6 year olds) Monday mornings at 11:00 am Miss Christine from Little Bee Yoga Co. is excited to share the magic of yoga with John Curtis Library families!! This fun class provides a beautiful bonding experience between the adult and child. Each class is 45 minutes. The class is geared toward children ages three to six years, but all ages are welcome to participate. Please bring a yoga mat or towel. Drop-in--no registration needed.

NEW! Story Time (5 & 6 year olds) Monday afternoons at 4:30 pm New! After-school story time for kindergarten and first grade age kids. We'll read longer picture books, maybe read an easy chapter book a chapter at a time. We may occasionally do a craft related to what we're reading. Drop-in, no registration required.

Toddler Time (18-35 months) Wednesday mornings at 10:15 am Simple picture books, big books, finger plays, songs and movement for children 18-35 months with a parent/caregiver. Drop-in, no registration required.

Lego Day Tuesday afternoons at 4:00 pm Come in and build with Legos for an hour. Completed projects will be displayed in the children's room. Drop-in, no registration needed.

Read to a Dog - All ages! Saturday, October 7 at 11:00 am Spider and Trouble, the Chihuahua therapy dogs, will visit. Children may read to them or just enjoy their company. Drop-in, no registration required.

Chess Club (6-11 year olds) Monday, October 16 at 6:00 pm Doug Southall leads a chess club for children age six and older, approximately every two weeks. Each meeting will begin with a brief lesson on some aspect of the game, followed by free play. Drop-in, no registration required.

Science Club (6-11 year olds) Wednesday, October 18 at 4:00 pm Fun science-themed activities and experiments. Dress to make a mess. For age 6 and older.

Halloween Bingo (6-11 year olds) Friday, October 20 at 4:00 pm Join us for a special Halloween-themed version of BINGO!! For children ages 6 and up.

Book Folding Craft (6-11 year olds) Friday, October 27 at 4:00 pm Create a witch's hat out of a discarded book! This program is designed for children ages 6-11.

VIRTUAL: Haunted Experiences Series with Jeff DePaoli. Spooky World with Creator David Bertolino Saturday, October 7 at 1:00 pm Haunted Experience with Jeff dePaoli-- Spooky World (Berlin, MA) with creator David Bertolino! In 1991, Spooky World opened in Berlin, Massachusetts as the first Halloween scream park. The attraction became so popular that it expanded well beyond its original haunted hayride, shaped a generation of New England Halloween lovers, and was celebrated in the forthcoming documentary “Spooktacular”. VIRTUAL: Author Talk with Jeremy D'Entremont Monday, October 16 at 7:00 pm Learn about the mysterious Woman in White in the Isles of Shoals and the spirit of a drowned lighthouse keeper at Penfield Reef in Connecticut, as well as some of the paranormal investigations he's been part of -- and much more. Jeremy is the president of the American Lighthouse Foundation, historian for the U.S. Lighthouse Society, and the author of more than 20 books and hundreds of articles on lighthouses and maritime history. VIRTUAL: Genograms Tuesday, October 17 at 7:00 pm Many health conditions tend to run in families. This reoccurrence is thought to be due to a combination of genetics, the environment, and personal lifestyle. A genogram is a detailed “family medical history pedigree” which can help track these diseases through multiple generations. Dr. Sarah J. Price Rosen has a PhD in Molecular Genetics from Marshall University School of Medicine, and attended a two-year clinical fellowship in Clinical Molecular Genetics at Boston University School of Medicine.
