Makerspace Programs

The Cranium:
Drop-In Open Hours

Wednesdays
(CLOSED 12/25 & 1/1)
5 - 7 PM
Main Library
For All Ages
(Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult guardian)

Drop-In Open Hours allows guests to use the makerspace equipment for personal projects and or experimentation!

Please note that The Cranium has a maximum capacity of 12 during open hours, and on some occasions we do have to turn people away when that capacity is reached. We recommend planning ahead and reserving equipment in advance. Reserve ahead here. Use of an equipment must be completed by the end of your reservation time so as not to run over into the following reservation.

Additionally, staff cannot provide detailed, one-on-one instruction during open hours. However, The Cranium webpage does provide detailed tutorials and instructions on the equipment and any additional questions you may have can be directed to quref@ocln.org

Makerspace programs are generously sponsored by the Friends of the Thomas Crane Public Library.

The Cranium was supported by grant funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the federal Library Services and Technology Act as administered by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners.

The Cranium: Craft Supply & Gift Wrap Swap!

Join us on Saturday, December 7 from 2 - 4 PM in the Community Meeting Room at the Main Library for a drop-in craft supply and gift wrap swap just in time for the holiday season! We'll be accepting supply donations between Wednesday, December 4 to Friday, December 6 at the Reference Desk only! Early donations grant you "Early Bird Access" between 2 - 2:30 PM. However, you don't need to donate to participate! The swap will be open to all from 2:30 - 4 PM.

Donation Guidelines:
  • Bring all craft swap/gift wrap donations to the Reference Desk (2nd floor) between Wednesday 12/4 to Friday 12/6 only. You can drop off donations any time the Main Library is open.
  • On Saturday, 12/7, donations will ONLY be accepted at the door between 2pm and 4pm.
  • Follow the "friend rule": if you wouldn't give the donation to your friend, don't bring it to the swap! Nearly empty bottles of paint, short bits of rope or yarn, fabric scraps less than 8" square, etc., will not be accepted for the swap. Sets or kits do not need to be complete, but should still contain usable quantities of its materials.
  • Please be thoughtful about the quantities you donate and take from the swap; it's okay to donate more than you take or take more than you donate, but we want everyone to have a chance to find something fun!
Any donations not taken in the swap will either go to The Cranium, future library programs, or be donated.

ESOL Volunteers Needed!

The library's English Talk Time program is seeking volunteer facilitators to lead (or co-lead) our ESOL conversation classes. At this time, we are hoping to welcome people who have experience helping adults improve their English language skills. If you don't have experience, but are excited about the idea of working with our local immigrant community, please reach out. Training will be provided!

Conversation Classes meet weekly at the library for 90 minutes and are designed to be an opportunity for adults to practice and improve their English in a welcoming and casual environment. A variety of teaching resources and assistance with lesson planning are available to our volunteers. For more information, please email Molly at quenglishtalk@ocln.org.

Thank you in advance for your interest in getting involved!

English Walk & Talk
Thank you to our volunteers and community members who participated in our weekly outdoor program, Walk and Talk! We enjoyed our last walk of the season in November, and the program is now on hold until the spring.

Our walks take us all around Quincy to the local parks, cemeteries and historic homes. We are fortunate to make friends along the way, as seen in this picture in Quincy's recently renovated Welcome Center. This past summer, the group also enjoyed guided tours of the YMCA and the Quincy Community Action Program. Thank you to everyone in the community who has welcomed our walkers!

This program is a great opportunity to practice your English, meet new people, and learn about Quincy Center. Visit the calendar in March to see when the walks will start again in the spring!

Call for Literacy Volunteers!
