Honoring our History, Imagining our Future
Thomas Crane Public Library Unveils New Look

The Thomas Crane Public Library is excited to announce a complete rebranding, featuring new logos, fonts, and color palettes, for a streamlined design. This initiative aims to enhance accessibility and coherence across both print and digital media.

The rebranding effort, spearheaded by a dedicated committee of library staff with backgrounds in marketing and design, was a meticulous process involving months of research, drafts, revisions, and valuable feedback from staff and the City of Quincy. Integral to this process was community input gathered through anonymous Strategic Planning community surveys, aligning the rebranding with the upcoming Strategic Plan FY2025-2030.

Key goals of this rebranding include updating the logo for optimal web use, leveraging the beloved crane's brand equity while respecting its dignified bearing, and using this logo as a starting point for a visual system that reflects a vital, forward-thinking organization. The new design is more versatile and accessible for both web and print.

The new color palette is a thoughtful reflection of the community and the City of Quincy's rich history. It includes shades inspired by the sunsets and wildlife at Wollaston Beach, granite quarries, sea glass, coastal nature habitats, Boston Harbor, library interior design, and the La Farge stained glass windows in Richardson. Additionally, colors representing each of Quincy's libraries have been incorporated to reflect the different neighborhoods/boroughs/regions of the city.

In conjunction with the rebranding, the Friends of the Thomas Crane Public Library bookstore will also feature these new designs. This transformation is timely, aligning with Quincy400 next year, where the old logos will be archived as part of the Library's history. The new branding embodies our vision of Access & Equity, Engagement, Education, Stewardship, Service, and Entertainment.

The Thomas Crane Public Library takes pride in the rich history of our community and looks forward with hope and aspiration to an innovative and exciting future. We turn outward to see our community and meet their needs. Our mission is to serve equitably, embrace our community, and offer education, entertainment, and access to all. We strive to be excellent stewards of our facilities and collections in service to the community.

This new look represents a significant step forward as we continue to serve and engage with our community, ensuring that the Thomas Crane Public Library remains a beacon of knowledge, culture, and inclusivity for years to come.

Makerspace Events

The Cranium makerspace is a creative and collaborative space for learning, exploring, and making. The makerspace is open to all ages, and sports a variety of maker equipment including sewing machines, Cricuts, 3D printers, and a laser cutter.

The Cranium:
Drop-In Open Hours

Wednesdays
5 - 7 PM
Main Library
For All Ages
(Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult guardian)

Drop-In Open Hours allows guests to use the makerspace equipment for personal projects and or experimentation!

Please note that The Cranium has a maximum capacity of 12 during open hours, and on some occasions we do have to turn people away when that capacity is reached. We recommend planning ahead and reserving equipment in advance. Reserve ahead here. Use of an equipment must be completed by the end of your reservation time so as not to run over into the following reservation.

Additionally, staff cannot provide detailed, one-on-one instruction during open hours. However, The Cranium webpage does provide detailed tutorials and instructions on the equipment and any additional questions you may have can be directed to quref@ocln.org

Makerspace programs are generously sponsored by the Friends of the Thomas Crane Public Library.

The Cranium was supported by grant funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the federal Library Services and Technology Act as administered by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners.

The Stolen Child
by Ann Hood

"For decades, Nick Burns has been haunted by a decision he made as a young soldier in World War I, when a French artist he’d befriended thrust both her paintings and her baby into his hands—and disappeared. In 1974, with only months left to live, Nick enlists Jenny, a college dropout desperate for adventure, to help him unravel the mystery. The journey leads them from Paris galleries and provincial towns to a surprising place: the Museum of Tears, the life’s work of a lonely Italian craftsman. Determined to find the baby and the artist, hopeless romantic Jenny and curmudgeonly Nick must reckon with regret, betrayal, and the lives they’ve left behind" [Novelist].

Dry
by Neal Shusterman

"The drought-or the Tap-Out, as everyone calls it-has been going on for a while now. Everyone's lives have become an endless list of don'ts : don't water the lawn, don't fill up your pool, don't take long showers. Until the taps run dry. Suddenly, Alyssa's quiet suburban street spirals into a warzone of desperation; neighbours and families turned against each other on the hunt for water. And when her parents don't return and her life-and the life of her brother-is threatened, Alyssa has to make impossible choices if she's going to survive" [Novelist].
