Happy Black History Month!

February celebrates and recognizes the histories, cultures and achievements of African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. Also known as African American History Month, the event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Over time the concept has expanded to encompass all of February as Black History Month. President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month in 1976, calling upon the public to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” This is the perfect time to learn about, reflect upon, and honor the stories of Black America and how those stories have helped to shape the course of history and culture.

Check out our displays throughout the Main Library for related recommended materials. You can also visit our Online Library, which is available 24/7, for ebooks, eaudiobooks, movies, television shows, music, and language-learning tools which feature collections honoring Black History Month! Additionally, join us for the second meeting of our Winter Wellness mini book club in which we'll be discussing Rest is Resistance by Tricia Hersey.

Library of Things Launching on January 31st!

The Staff and leadership of the Thomas Crane Public Library are proud to announce the unveiling of our new Library of Things at the Main Library on Wednesday, January 31, 2024 from 2 - 4 PM.

The Thomas Crane Public Library's Library of Things is a circulating collection of non-traditional materials that provide the opportunity to learn and grow by doing, seeing, and making. You can borrow ukuleles, a stand mixer, a power washer, and many more amazing non-traditional items with your library card! Take our Things home to try before you buy, start projects you've been meaning to tackle, discover a new hobby or even host your own karaoke party.

The aim is to foster the circular economy and reduce excessive consumption and accumulation of objects we don’t use. It is based on the “lend instead of buy” principle and not only helps to reduce environmental impact, but also promotes community belonging and mutual learning.

How many times a year do you use a power drill? Is it really necessary to keep one at home? Our homes are full of equipment we hardly use, although it might be useful for occasional specific tasks. Instead of 100 drills doing nothing in 100 homes, would it not be better sharing one among all of us?

Please join us for light refreshments, and to ask any questions about what the Library of Things is, what it contains, and why it is important.

Calling Quincy Class of...

We are looking to reunite with Quincy yearbooks from all years and all schools. If you are clearing out the attic or making space on the bookshelf in your den, please consider donating your old yearbook to the Archives and Special Collections at Thomas Crane Public Library.

We are seeking good condition yearbooks from any and all Quincy schools, public or private, and from any and all graduating years to help build a browsable collection of Quincy History!

Email us at qulocalhistory@ocln.org to donate your yearbook or call us at 617-376-1307.

Thank you to all our patrons and the community for supporting your local libraries - whether it’s through checking out books, attending library programs and community events, printing important documents, learning English in the Library's Talk Time classes, or even just enjoying a quiet study and work environment.

In the name of Library Love, keep an eye for our newest seasonal volunteer, "Fabio Crane," at the Main Library this month! Visit the Main Library this February and meet Fabio! We'll also have fun themed bookmarks and button pins for anyone interested.

Rock, Rosetta, Rock! Roll, Rosetta, Roll!: Presenting Sister Rosetta Tharpe, the Godmother of Rock & Roll
by Tonya Bolden

"Award-winning author Tonya Bolden and acclaimed illustrator R. Gregory Christie deliver an inspiring true story about the life, career, and impact of twentieth-century blues and gospel singer Sister Rosetta Tharpe, who was a trailblazer for rock and roll. Before there was Elvis, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, and Johnny Cash, there was Sister Rosetta Tharpe. The godmother of rock and roll started as a little girl from Arkansas with music in her air, in her hair, in her bones, wiggling her toes. With a bigguitar in hand and a big voice in her soul, she grew into a rock and roll trailblazer in a time when women were rarely seen rocking out. Her guitar picking was like nobody else's" [Novelist]!
