National Library Week:
Ready, Set, Library!

This year's theme for National Library Week 2024 (April 7-13) is Ready, Set, Library! National Library Week is an annual celebration highlighting the valuable role libraries, librarians, and library workers play in transforming lives and strengthening our communities.

In 1957, the committee developed a plan for National Library Week based on the idea that once people were motivated to read, they would support and use libraries. With the cooperation of the American Library Association and with help from the Advertising Council, the first National Library Week was observed in 1958 with the theme "Wake Up and Read!"  This 2024 celebration marks the 66th anniversary of the first event.

Read more about the history of National Library Week at American Libraries magazine, and check out the list of past National Library Week themes.

Strategic Planning has begun!
Share Your Thoughts!

As part of the Strategic Planning process, the Thomas Crane Public Library is seeking community input on what visitors think about the library and how it can be improved. The Thomas Crane Public Library will host two public listening sessions at each of the library’s locations to hear residents’ thoughts. Listening sessions are commonly used to hear what’s on people’s minds and engage people in emerging or important topics. Library staff will facilitate these listening sessions with some guiding questions about the library space and services.

There is also an online community survey to further share your thoughts! Print copies of the survey will be available at all Quincy Library locations. Translations of the survey (Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Vietnamese, and Spanish) will be available soon.

Timeline:
  • Saturday, March 23 from 1 - 2 PM – Main Library Listening Session 1

Solar Eclipse Events at the Library!

Come join us on the Main Library Frown Lawn for the upcoming eclipse on Monday, April 8 from 2 - 4 PM. On April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will cross North America, passing over Mexico, the United States, and Canada. A total solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, completely blocking the face of the Sun. The sky will darken as if it were dawn or dusk. The eclipse will reach its max of 93% complete at 3:29 PM. Everyone is welcome to gather together on the lawn for this historic event.

This will be an outdoor viewing where eclipse glasses are required! We will have some eclipse glasses available on a first come, first serve basis. There will also be a live stream viewing inside the Community Meeting Room.

This event is for all ages and is weather dependent.
To learn more about the upcoming solar eclipse, visit here.

Later in the day, join us for an Eclipse themed movie night where we'll be screening The Twilight Saga - Eclipse from 6 - 8 PM in the Community Meeting Room of the Main Library.

The third installment of the "Twilight" saga finds Bella forced to choose between Edward, a vampire and the love of her life, or Jacob Black, a werewolf and her best friend. The result of her decision may reignite the ancient feud between vampires and werewolves, while a scorned vampire bent on revenge appears responsible for a string of brutal murders.

Sensory: Life on the Spectrum contains illustrated explorations of everything from life pre-diagnosis to tips on how to explain autism to someone who isn't autistic, to suggestions for how to soothe yourself when you're feeling overstimulated. With unique, vibrant comic-style illustrations and the emotional depth and vulnerability of memoir, this book depicts these varied experiences with the kind of insight that only those who have lived them can have" [Novelist].

Hidden Systems: Water, Electricity, the Internet, and the Secrets behind the Systems We Use Every Day (Graphic Novel)
by Dan Nott

"What was the first message sent over the internet? How much water does a single person use every day? How was the electric light invented? For every utility people use each day, there's a hidden history below the surface - a story of intrigue, drama, humor, and inequity. This graphic novel provides a guided tour through the science of the past - and how the decisions people made while inventing and constructing early technology still affect the way people use it today. Full of art, maps, and diagrams, Hidden Systems is a thoughtful, humorous exploration of the history of science, and what needs to be done now to change the future" [Novelist].
