Giving kids a chance; Parry Sound’s library is a lifeline

Although the global pandemic has proved to be challenging for most, the Parry Sound Public Library is taking this opportunity to bring growth and rejuvenation to its children’s area.

During the quiet of the winter months and another lockdown, library chief executive officer Rita Orr came up with the idea to create a portal entrance to the facility’s children’s area along with other improvements.

“I contacted Keebee Play — which is in Midland, Ontario and all Canadian-built — to create the portal entrance,” Orr said. “I was determined to keep the wall portal entrance with our natural environment — water and animals and trees.”

The hope, Orr said, is to have the entrance ready by the end of June.

Kids' Portal - Escape into Knowledge

Help revitalize the Children’s Department at the Parry Sound Public Library with the launch of Kids’ Portal: Escape into Knowledge. Our goal with Kids’ Portal: Escape into Knowledge is to create a safe space that promotes creativity, inclusion and learning.

Our funding goals will allow us to breathe fresh life into an already well-loved community space. An enticing custom archway will be the entrance to the Kids’ Portal. This will be a unique visual entrance, highlighting our Northern Ontario culture.

Play-learning spaces are integral to creating a positive library experience and literacy play tools will help children acquire a firm foundation of general knowledge and allow them to become successful readers.

If you have ever felt stuck in your life, with regrets that haunt you and unanswered “what ifs”, The Midnight Library by Matt Haig, has a unique way of shedding some light and hope during this especially trying year. The story centres on Nora Seed, a woman at the end of her rope, who is ready to give up on her life. In an unexpected turn, Nora finds herself in the Midnight Library where she is given the chance to face her regrets and discover the answers to the “what ifs”.
