MPL Connect
                               February 2023
From the Director:

MPL will celebrate its third annual World Languages Festival on Saturday, February 25, 2023, from 2:00 pm-4:00 pm at the Main Library. Families with children of all ages are invited to experience international culture, crafts, food tastings from RGV restaurants, and activities, including K-pop dancers, Korean calligraphy, henna hand art, Ukrainian artifacts, and much more! MPL has a World Languages Collection consisting of books and films in Spanish, Korean, Tagalog, and Hindi. This multicultural event is a way to bring families together in the Library. When we share ethnic food, dance, music, and crafts, we learn more about our diverse culture here in the RGV, and encourage respect and tolerance toward our neighbors. Through this event, we promote an understanding of many cultures and learn to celebrate our own unique heritage. MPL also celebrates diversity by ensuring that we provide content by and about a wide variety of people and cultures which authentically reflect an array of ideas, stories, and experiences. Through multicultural events and an ever-growing, diverse collection, MPL acts as a mirror, a window, and sliding glass doors to promote an appreciation of the human experience.

Giovanni's Room by James Baldwin

"A young American involved with both a woman and a man...Baldwin writes of these
matters with unusual candor and yet with such dignity and intensity."

The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry  by Gabrielle Zevin

“This novel has humor, romance, a touch of suspense, but most of all love--love of books
and bookish people and, really, all of humanity in its imperfect glory.” —
Eowyn Ivey, author of The Snow Child

An American Marriage by  Tayari Jones

“I love An American Marriage and I’m so excited for this book to be in the world.
Tayari’s novel is timely, thoughtful, and beautifully written. Reading it, I found myself angry
as hell, laughing out loud, choking up and cheering. A gem of a book.”
—Jacqueline Woodson, author of Another Brooklyn and Brown Girl Dreaming

The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom

Grissom's unsentimental debut twists the conventions of the antebellum novel
just enough to give readers an involving new perspective on what would otherwise be fairly stock material.... The planation' social order's  emphasis on violence, love, power,
and corruption provides a trove of tension and grit, while the many nefarious doings
will keep readers hooked to the twisted, yet hopeful, conclusion.
