MPL Connect
                                  April 2022
From the Director:

Thank you to everyone who came out for MPL’s first big, in-person event of 2022, the World Languages Festival, featuring the Botanical Fridas sculpture exhibition. Highlights from this event, which welcomed 1,800 visitors, included an Art Discovery Self-Guided Tour map, international food samples and activities, a used book sale, cultural discovery tables, crafts for all ages, and a Korean poetry presentation. The weather was beautiful and families had a great time!

Coming soon on April 9 is MPL’s Community Family Health Fair. All are welcome to attend this event, with opening remarks from the Office of Congressman Vicente Gonzalez, free health screenings, health and wellness vendors, children’s crafts, and a free train ride to emphasize our theme: Get Your Health on Track!

Then, on April 30, families are invited to celebrate El día de los niños/El día de los libros with MPL! Acclaimed children’s authors Diana Lopez, Chris Barton, and Jennifer Ziegler will read from their latest books. There will be signed book raffles at each author session, a free book giveaway, crafts, popcorn, cotton candy, and a family-oriented Selena Look-Alike Contest. Having begun as Children’s Day in 1925, Día today is a nationally recognized initiative that emphasizes the importance of literacy for all children from all backgrounds.  As always, MPL events are free admission and open to the public. We hope to see you this Spring! For more information, go to our website at www.mcallenlibrary.net.

The Japanese Lover by Isabel Allende

Vividly and pointedly evoking prejudices "unconventional" couples among the current-day elderly faced (and some are still battling), Allende, as always, gives progress and hopeful spirits their due.
