MPL Connect
                                  May 2022
From the Director:

We have two exciting service launches coming soon. I’m pleased to announce that MPL is the recipient of two grants from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to the Texas State Library and Archives Commission. MPL was awarded $35,127.00 for the Texas Supports Libraries project, “Job Fair in a Bag,” which will include a lendable briefcase with a laptop, a hotspot, and workforce development materials to help our patrons find employment. Patrons with library cards in good standing will be able to take advantage of this pilot project. This grant will also fund additional books to our lending collection on various, timely employment topics.

MPL was also awarded $25,000.00 for the project, “Care4Me.” Funding for this Texas Telehealth project will include a fully mobile station with a touch-screen computer and ring light for visitors to conduct a private telehealth appointment with their health care provider. MPL is aware that the prevalence of diabetes and obesity in the RGV is a serious challenge. Part of the solution is getting access to regular, routine care to get a diagnosis as soon as possible and receive advice on changing diet and habits that contribute to poor health. Visitors will also be able to check their blood pressure and oxygen saturation levels. The “Care4Me” station will be available at the Main Library at no charge.

My hope is that the future implementation of these two grants will provide opportunities for our community members to make positive changes in their lives.

 Less by Andrew Sean Greer

"A love story, a satire of the American abroad, a rumination on time and the human heart, by an author The New York Times has hailed as “inspired, lyrical,” “elegiac,” “ingenious,” as well as “too sappy by half,” Less shows a writer at the peak of his talents raising the curtain on our shared human comedy." --Goodreads.com

Verity by Colleen Hover

"The energy and pace in this book are like a fun house at a carnival. It's ever-changing, and just when you
think you know what to expect next, Hoover hits you with another turn. Up until the very final page,
readers are mining for clues. Just when you thought you figured out the who, what, when, where, and why,
it completely changes, leaving you gobsmacked.”―BuzzFeed
